The New Dawn of 1989

An overview of the political scenario of the subcontinent

in relation to the number-powers of the ennead/decades.

The close of this important year merits a brief discussion regarding its place in the cosmology of the New Way. VISHAAL readers who have studied my books are in a better position to appreciate the meaning of the events I will analyse in their connection to this work, since one of the main features of 1988 has been described already in a survey of the three last decades of this century in The New Way, Volumes 1 & 2. Properly speaking, these are not decades but rather cycles of nine years, or enneads. However, for all practical purposes we refer to them as decades because the periods I have chosen to analyse in my work began in 1971, a year of 9 number-power and therefore the start of a new enneateric cycle. 1971 fell very close to the beginning of the decade (1970); therefore we could speak of that 9 year as the beginning of the 70s and find it to be close enough to the start of the decade to permit this liberty.

The 1980s are even more easily referred to in this manner, since the beginning of the decade coincided exactly with the start of the new ennead. For this reason, in various articles I have emphasised the unique significance and power of this particular 9-year cycle. Indeed, its power in certain important ways surpasses that of any other ennead in this century.

The student may refer to The New Way, Volume 1, page 153, for a background to the present discussion. To summarise briefly, the culmination of the Uranus power of the 1970s (Uranus is the 7th planet and hence ‘ruler’ of that decade) occurred in the year of 7 power in that ennead. This was 1978 (=7). But in terms of numbers exclusively, we find that 1977 brought a doubling of the 7. Therefore 1977 marked the beginning of a process that was to extend into the next 7-power year (1978=7) and through to the end of the decade. Events begun in 1977 would reach their inexorable climax in 1979 and thus open the way for a new ennead and decade in 1980.

I had foreseen important events for those years and written about them in various contexts. These cycles have been particularly important for India, a country uniquely attuned to the power of the 9 – or the Supramental Shakti and her action through Time. In order for this discussion to serve its purpose of casting light on this action, I shall therefore use the subcontinent exclusively as an example. By this I mean the entire area delineated by the Capricorn hieroglyph reproduced later in this article, comprising all the nations that were once the united India before Partition wreaked a havoc that is still to be contained. Indeed, we may be more specific: the events I am describing concerning the action of the Supramental Shakti via the power of time are a part of the process of reunification of the subcontinent.

This may seem an unlikely attainment at this point. It may seem that even greater barriers are being erected and are being strengthened day by day. However, this is not entirely true. The process we are witnessing and are able to describe within the context of the new cosmology so accurately, is the means for working out the causes of Partition, for exhausting certain adverse forces until the time when unification will not only be possible but inevitable. Events in the subcontinent and in the world will conspire to force a new experience of unity in India.

In a conclusive manner I have been able to show how the power of the 7 – or Uranus – worked in the last decade. In the portion of The New Way referred to above, I presented the dates of all the elections held in the subcontinent, beginning in March, 1977. They were all held on days of 7 power. The process was very clear then, as it was unfolding, and not merely by hindsight. We could see that an ‘exultant rise’ – to use Sri Aurobindo’s phrase – had been given to the political opposition in India for the purpose of exhausting those forces of any real and effective power to undermine the stability of the nation.

This question of stability merits some clarification, however. In the context of the New Way stability is distinguished from the ordinary meaning attributed to the word in political circles. In the new cosmology India is stable when the Solar and Lunar Lines are functioning, when each member is allowed to do his or her work, when the Shakti is overtly in control of events so that the members of the Lines can fulfil their destinies. This happens when each is in his or her ‘place’, both in time and space. In this way they provide the stable axis the nation requires in order that it may serve as the pivot, as the centre of the new Age.

Admittedly, the members of these two Lines have been under severe attacks and at times their work seemed to have been truncated. It seemed that the blows of fate were too powerful to sustain and that the continuity in the Lines would be broken, resulting in an impossibility to carry the process through to completion.

However, with the new Gnosis I have been able to demonstrate how that control remains in the hands of the Supramental Shakti and that even in the most apparently negative and disruptive circumstances – such as the assassination of Indira Gandhi, third member of the Lunar Line – it has always been the Supramental Shakti in control and utilising those negative events to further the work.

We have to accept that the ‘knots’ are many in society and in ourselves. Given the presence of these twisted, hardened pockets of energy and the crusts they give rise to in the individual and collective consciousness, so-called negative manifestations are inevitable. Nonetheless, the important point to bear in mind always is that these events, hand in hand with the positive ones, are ALL part of the process of unification and they conspire jointly to carry out the grand design of the Divine Mother for this new Age.

The time will come when the negative will cease, but this depends entirely on the condition of the energy flow. This enneateric cycle beginning in 1980 brought tremendous progress precisely in that area. 1984 introduced a reversal in the flow and consequently the patterns we see via the new cosmology are even more easily discernible than before. It would seem as if a certain ‘communications gap’ had been filled at that time. What actually happened was that the Yoga of the Chamber bore its predictable results. I have described this elsewhere in VISHAAL over the past months, and even in this issue.

The student may refer to the portion of The New Way cited above for a background to the present discussion of the 1980s. However, as will become immediately evident, these patterns do not repeat themselves endlessly and in an identical manner. They mutate, similar to an organic substance in evolution and dependent entirely upon the totality of conditions that make up the physical environment in which this mutation transpires. Likewise, the patterns the flow of Time presents with regard to events in the Indian subcontinent, mutate in accordance with various combinations of elements. One is the work already accomplished; another is the pull of the inevitable future, the result of that past/present achievement.

Thus we have a clear pattern for the enneatic cycle of the 1970s in which the dominant planet was Uranus. But in the 1980s the predominant force is Neptune and therefore another pattern emerges due to this additional influence, which is, nonetheless, intrinsically connected to that of the 1970s. It is this interrelation and interconnectedness that is essential to perceive if the student is to understand the language of the supramental Gnosis and observe the power of the Shakti working in the world in this exciting period of transition.

A major feature of our work is this factor: a perception which sees the relation between things, ever and always. Intellectually some may have come to understand that such a connection does exist. For example, the advance in ecological studies during this century has been a principal means to show that the environment of the planet is an interconnected mass; if we damage one part we will eventually feel the effect in other areas which previously were thought to be isolated. A happening such as the Chernobyl disaster is an example of an event that perhaps more forcefully than any other helped to disseminate the understanding that we live on a planet which is one connected whole, regardless of the artificial boundaries we may erect between states.

These events help to alter the collective consciousness; but the patterns the new cosmology describes are the greater aid in this expansion to a perception of oneness, insofar as the connections it reveals not only incorporate human beings and nations, they also allow us to understand the Plan we are living elements of, the patterns that we are erecting and which are the means for establishing a new race of a superior poise on this Earth. Thus, we see the manner in which events and people involved in these designs are amazingly connected; how they are something on the order of chess pieces moved by a masterful, omniscient and omnipotent Player who has the power to control everything that transpires on Earth. Admittedly, this knowledge is not for beginners, not for those who still cling to the notion of ‘free will’ as the propelling force in their lives. This New Way is for seekers, few in number no doubt, who have progressed in their inner work to the point where they are acutely aware of the illusion of free will, though at the same time they have seen that it was a necessary ploy for the mental creation, that the concept of free will is, in fact, a key feature of that creation, insofar as it was a product of the separative consciousness which characterises a mental species.

When a higher poise is reached there is a major shift or reversal of consciousness. The notion of free will and its need vanishes and in its place there is a conscious surrender, an offering of oneself as an instrument of the new creative Power manifesting in the world. Part of that shift is the quality of perception we are discussing: a vision of oneness, of interconnectedness, of harmony, based on the greater Harmony of which we are a part, – the harmony of our solar system. The cycles discussed herein are taken from that pattern we have been born into and which is engrained in every atom and in every cell of our bodies. Because of this the Supramental Shakti maintains a control over this creation which is impeccable. The harmony of our System is a replica of the physical instruments we are. It is this oneness that characterises our material creation.

The cycles Time weaves in and through us are an expression of that Harmony. Hence, we read the significance of the patterns they form in the language that arises out of our solar system itself. The ‘sense’ of the design is given to us in this way. And periodically throughout the Earth’s evolution, seers have incarnated who have been able to read this language; periodically a renewal must come about, as, for example, in our times when the System has expanded to nine planets from the previous six. As I have stated time and again, it is this shift which is the prime indicator of the expansion being forced upon us as a civilisation, as individual components of that civilisation; that is, the inclusion of the 7th, 8th, and 9th planets and therefore the possibility in this Age to bring the planetary harmony into synchronisation with the number system and hence with the calendar. Since the number/planets involved in this shift are 7, 8, and 9, and these are related via our number system to the calendar, we are obliged to accept that the three last decades of this century/millennium – the 70s, the 80s, and the 90s – are immensely important, insofar as they relate to and comprise the aforementioned expansion to 9 planets; or rather, they synthesise that expansion, and hence these decades are the compact time periods in which, in a concentrated manner, this expansion is to be set upon its definitive way.

I repeat, one must see the connection between happenings in these final cycles. If not, it is difficult to perceive the sense in the design. Fortunately, I am able to provide a clear example in the immediate present of such connections taking place within the culmination periods of the 70s and the 80s. The former I have discussed to a certain extent in pointing out that the sensitive period was 1977-78, which set events in motion in India that played themselves out to the end of the cycle in 1979 and the beginning of the new ennead. I refer to the rise of the Janata government in March 1977, and its fall in July of 1979; and finally the return to power once again of Indira Gandhi exactly at the close of the ennead and the beginning of the new one: January, 1980. The doubling of the 7 power was the signal for the start of that process, particularly acute in the 7th month of 1977.

In this enneatic cycle centred on the 8 and the planet Neptune, we observe that it is in this year, 1988, that the doubling occurs. In addition, the 8th month of 1988 would be like the 7th month of 1977, signifying an intensification, a trebling and a quadrupling of the 8. Intensified accelerations in the process are marked by these culminations. The Supramental Shakti uses time as her executive Power. Or rather, she IS that Power, and the destiny of the planet unfolds according to the quality of that Consciousness-Force.

Let us examine these two periods in conjunction and we shall see that an event which transpired in the culmination period of the decade of the 70s (7.7.1977) was carried over to this new decade and bore its consequential results. To a certain extent I have discussed this event in The New Way. Here I would simply like to add the latest data. In this way the student is given factual proof of the truth of this cosmological aid and a verification of the precious help it can give in comprehending in a non-speculative fashion that the dramatic happenings in the political scenario on the subcontinent are a part of a connected, intelligent and intelligible process.

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, former prime minister of Pakistan, was put to death by the military regime which came to power through a coup on 5.7.1977. The culmination we have been discussing was 7.7.1977. The student can observe that this coup took place a mere two days before the most significant number/calendar combination of the decade. However, there is more hidden in this timing.

July 5, 1977 was Bhutto’s 4.5 passage. On the precise day of his overthrow he was 49.5 years old, a configuration that happens only once in 9 years. However, perhaps the most important point to bring out is the fact that Bhutto’s birthday was January 5th. This, as students of the new way know, is the day of the year corresponding to 15 degrees Capricorn – or the day/degree of the ‘soul of India’. Thus, in 1977 I wrote the following in The New Way, while discussing the sacred geography of the country on the backdrop of the Gnostic Circle.

‘To give a practical example of the nature of the 4.5 Orbit in a human being’s life, and its quality of reversal, we can study the recent political events in Pakistan. The former Prime Minister, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, was born on 5 January, 1928. On July 5, 1977 he was exactly 49½ years old, – that is, he was passing over the 4.5 Orbit on that day, and as it was his second and last passage over that point in his decade of the 40s, the first one having occurred when he was 40½, it was a particularly critical and sensitive time. On that day of 9 number-power, he was overthrown and jailed and his trial for murder began.

‘Moreover, the initiate must observe that Bhutto was born on 5 January, the day corresponding to the Eye of Shiva in the physical body of India. It is thus evident that he somehow plays a central role in the process of unification, or serves a pivotal function.’

The New Way, Vol. 2, page 411

It was seen in this way that Bhutto’s imprisonment and later his execution were somehow important in the process of unification given his birth on 5 January, and the manner in which he was attuned to the power of the Supramental Shakti working in his life cycle. These significant events in his life would bear upon the future in a manner directly related to the process of unification. With this background, let us see what transpired during the present culmination of the 80s, following the one which saw Bhutto ousted and ultimately executed, and if they do indeed bear any relation to the 1970s.

The corresponding period of culmination in this decade fell in August 1988. In that month the power of the 8 was trebled and quadrupled, as the 7 was on 7.7.1977. What was the significant event, if any, in this period? And was it connected in any way to the 7 culmination?

Bhutto was ousted by General Zia-ul-Haq, who assumed power that day and ruled Pakistan from the time he initiated the coup to the present. In the culminating month of this decade, on 17.8.1988, a plane carrying General Zia and various others exploded, bringing his rule to an abrupt and unexpected end, a rule which began precisely on Bhutto’s fateful 4.5 passage and which coincided with the culmination of the last decade. Thus circumstances ‘conspired’ to bring about Zia’s elimination in exact harmony with the cycles of number-power culminations, but this time corresponding to the power of the 8. There are three days in the month, all separated by nine days, which bear relation to the quadrupled 8. These are 8.8.1988, 17(=8).8.1988, 26(=8).8.1988. The date of Zia’s demise was 17.8.1988, the second of these 9-day rounds. His death was directly linked to Bhutto’s overthrow. More importantly, it has paved the way for Bhutto’s own daughter, Benazir, to assume the role of leader of Pakistan, provided the military and the fundamentalists will allow her party to come to power. Indeed, this is the ‘knot’ Pakistan must undo and which will be the means to achieve unification ultimately.

Assuming that this first hurdle will be passed, it will be during the rule of Benazir Bhutto that important events will transpire to bring the question of the unification of the subcontinent into prominence. There is every possibility that relations between India and Pakistan will be at their best during the coming cycle – their best in the context of what ‘best’ means for this unifying process.

Something further regarding the 8 needs to be pointed out in the lives of Bhutto and his daughter. His birthday is a day of 8 power (5.1.1928=26=8), while Benazir’s is a 9, and an interesting combination as well: 21.6.1953=27=9. Her numbers – day/month/year – can be broken down to 3, 6, 9, the most important number pattern of the new cosmology. The final sum is 27, or the third multiple of 9. Being a ‘daughter’, it is interesting to note this, since this third multiple is significantly connected to the cosmic principle of the Daughter.

However, while Bhutto’s life was true to the 8 all along, and his role was really a preparatory one, not a climax or culmination, is it left to the 9 – in this case Benazir – to complete what he began. The 8 is always an incompletion: a further step must be taken to conclude the process. This is Benazir’s task. But a study of the present situation and the prevalence of the 8 indicates that she and the people of Pakistan must live through certain experiences before the term of the 9 can begin, which will be a cleansing, a dissolving of a certain ‘residue’, a residue that is hampering precisely the coming of the 9.

To understand why this is so, we must look at the numbers prominent in the recent Pakistani elections. The day was 16.11.1988, equalling 8. Benazir herself was 35 years old, and hence in an 8 year. The elections have occurred in the 8th month/sign, Scorpio, of the powerfully 8 year. Thus it is clear that not until Benazir Bhutto passes into the 9 – after her 36th birthday in June 1989 – and the planet itself experiences the shift from 8 to 9 next year, will she really begin to deal with the residue of the 8.

In the portion of The New Way quoted above, I was discussing the geography of India on the basis of its latitude and longitude, projected onto the 360 degrees of the Gnostic Circle. In addition, India’s geographical mass was analysed with respect to the Capricorn hieroglyph. In Time & Imperishability I have gone into this matter in greater detail, especially its relation to the gunas of Hindu tradition – rajas, sattwa, and tamas. The Capricorn hieroglyph ‘contains’ the three gunas, or qualities of energy flow. The diagram below makes clear which portion of the land-mass corresponds to which of the gunas. The student can observe that Pakistan falls exclusively within the area covered by the Rajas guna.

Consequently, this energy flow will be its sole expression. Cut off from the other two gunas, Sattwa and Tamas, which correspond to the other parts of India, there is no attenuating force in this expression. The Rajas guna is the energy flow of the Kshatriya or warrior element in society. This is acted out in modern society by the military. It is therefore understandable that Pakistan has been almost exclusively under the rule of the military from the time of its inception. There was a brief respite during Bhutto’s time, but ultimately he too succumbed to the pressure of the Rajas guna through the military.

I repeat, in Pakistan, in that area which was carved out of India at the time of Partition, nothing but the Rajas guna prevails. There is no attenuating influx. Consequently it is this ‘knot’ that is the pivotal problem in the establishment of the area as a separate nation. Indeed, the military will be the ultimate undoing of Pakistan, just as it was the undoing of East Pakistan.

Regarding the latter, we see that the same problem exists. Bangladesh consists of the Tamas guna exclusively. This is commonly equated with the force of Destruction. As I have written in The New Way, Vol. 2, p. 355, the destructive powers of Nature are felt in Bangladesh, or the ‘armpit’ of India, with an unusual ferocity. Again, there is no attenuating influx of the other gunas. The three – Rajas, Sattwa and Tamas – are meant to act in harmony in creation. Any division of the three results in imbalance and consequent collapse. Thus the collapse of the polarised nation, West and East Pakistan, was entirely predictable. Likewise, the collapse of West Pakistan as an independent entity, along with Bangladesh, is inevitable, given the fact that there are no forces available to soften the impact of the Rajas and Tamas gunas.

Another area in the Capricorn nation-symbol which awoke to the force of the 8 during this year of its culmination was Burma. Comprising the ‘tail’ of the symbol, Burma will be unavoidably swept along in the process of unification, posing little or no resistance when the time comes.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, falls under the Sattwa guna of preservation. The weakness of this guna when it stands alone is its susceptibility to orthodoxy which can cause its ultimate collapse. It is in this light that we must assess the activities of the Buddhist clergy in the political affairs of Sri Lanka with regard to the Tamil problem and the tensions that have been generated. The Sri Lankan’s turn to India for assistance in the impasse such orthodoxy has brought about is another example of the need for an attenuating influx even in the Sattwa guna.

To some extent central India does enjoy a harmony of all the three gunas, but this is in a diluted form, given the existence of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka which cut into the nation at those crucial points in her consciousness/land-mass and bring about seepages in the energy flow. The heart and soul, the centre of the new Age and its dawning world order must be the area on the globe that is a harmonised integration of the three gunas – wherein each one supports and sustains the other and there is no drainage of any sort.

On the basis of the knowledge provided by the new cosmology, we see that it is the existence and reliance on just one of the energy flows that will provide the means to bring about unification in the subcontinent. Bangladesh, for example, cannot survive the constant onslaught of Mother Nature in her Tamas energy flow as an independent nation. The natural calamities and the constant destruction which the area experiences can only be overcome successfully if that ‘armpit’ is an integral part of India; however, an India strong enough in her economy and political organisation to be able to absorb those disasters with relative ease. On its own Bangladesh will face ultimate disintegration under the weight of its isolated energy experience. The Shakti, using the tool of her destructive Tamas guna in continuous natural calamities, will undermine the economy of the State to such an extent that Bangladesh will either join India in the unification of the subcontinent or find itself overwhelmed by debts and thus left vulnerable to a host of aggressive forces because of the fragility of its political and economical structure.

Likewise Pakistan will disintegrate unless an attenuating force is allowed to soften the excessive brittleness of a Rajas guna that is isolated from its other companions on the energy spectrum. The military would thus continue to be the undoing of the country. Finally, the people of Pakistan will turn to India in order to break the deadlock and be able to reach some form of release from the weight of an exclusive Rajas guna without any softening influx. The fundamentalism that seeks to grip the country is also an effect of the predominance of the Rajas guna when isolated in the flow of energy. This guna is especially vulnerable to brittleness and the formation of hard crusts which call down a power of destruction equal to this brittle consistency.

A word should be said concerning the mechanism the new cosmology describes. To appreciate the effect of these cycles a radical change must come about in one’s perceptive capacities. Prejudices and fixed ideas against what I call the Law of Correspondences must be set aside and ultimately eliminated entirely. Above all, a consciousness that sees the oneness of existence is indispensable. This perception of oneness is the major foundation of the new consciousness which is becoming established on Earth in this Age of the Supermind.

A primary factor is the need to see the interconnectedness which binds events together and forms the complex and exquisite harmony we experience on Earth; for example, the conjunct workings of the various elements which allow us to see the work of the Supramental Shakti in the world – the calendar in us today, the number system and how the two can now be linked to provide a means to monitor this Action. All of this is part of the process which is offering seekers the possibility of becoming conscious, of participating consciously in the establishment of the new way on the planet. One must learn to appreciate that these developments are not arbitrary. The calendar exists as it does because the number system is what it is, because the solar system measures what it does, and that all these, and much more, are interrelated, interconnected parts of one whole. One could not be without the other.

Another factor is the question of number-power itself. Our numerical system measures a gradation of power – the power of time which is linked to the harmony of the System. Our solar system is indeed a giant Clock; the Sun is the central piece binding all the pieces or parts of this Clock to itself as one whole. The orbits traced by the planets, demarcated by their passage around the central Sun, not only mark periods but they generate power in that time utilises the cycles they demarcate for creation, preservation and dissolution – the process to which a material creation is inevitably subject if it is to subsist in a physical, manifest dimension.

Finally, it must be stated that the closer one is to the Centre, the easier it is to perceive these harmonies and to be their conscious instrument – not by a mental activity, which actually interferes with the action, but by a poise of consciousness, a condition of being which allows a superior harmony to be expressed through a refined instrument. Likewise, considering that India is the centre of the new Age of the Supermind, the cosmic harmony expresses itself with an exquisite precision in the affairs of the nation, easily perceived for this reason. It is in India that the Solar and Lunar Lines carry out their work, and from India this extends to the rest of the planet. The Lines are intrinsic elements in the functioning of this great Clock. Therefore we are able to observe the harmony manifesting in their lives more clearly than elsewhere; indeed, it is through the activity of these Agents that the new and superior pattern is being drawn. Centrally placed this becomes possible, nay inevitable. The closer one is to the centre, the greater and clearer will perception be. The same may be said for the individual: one who has unveiled the perfectly aligned centre in one’s inner being perceives what for others is non-existent or seemingly illusory, because this centrality is what permits the new seeing to unfold the harmony.

India has had to face immensely difficult times in this cycle of the 80s. The assassination of Indira Gandhi occurred in the period of the great Reversal of the final three decades of the millennium. This period comprises 27 years, 1971 to 1998, both years of 9 number-power. 1984 was the exact halfway mark of those 27 years and it occurred in this sensitive and special ennead of the 1980s, wherein each of its years was synchronised perfectly with the cosmic harmony of the 9 planets; i.e., 1984=22=4, and the year was the 4th year in the cycle: 198/4. I have discussed the significance of Indira Gandhi’s death and the number patterns involved in the VISHAAL, 0/1, dated October, 1985.

I must state again that having an applied cosmology at our disposal such as the New Way grants is an immeasurably valuable aid in this difficult transition, where both positive and negative happenings confront us constantly and tempt us to use the age-old method of cutting out of the perception what is perceived as negative, thereby withholding that element of integration which is such an indispensable ingredient in the gnostic perception and the creation it gives rise to. Understandably, we can see and accept the workings of the Supreme Shakti in the positive; we have considerable difficulty in accepting that that same Power can be in the negative as well. But, I repeat, this sort of distinction is the result of our mental orientation and the value system and ethical codes it has given rise to. The Supramental Shakti is untouched by these distinctions. The Power fulfils what is in the Seed; and that Seed takes root in a particular Soil and flourishes in consonance with everything that constitutes the nature of that Soil. The Seed now, in this Age of the Supermind, has also undergone a notable transformation, which distinguishes it from all the others Time has implanted in the consciousness-soil of the Earth; by consequence, the Soil it embeds itself in for materialisation, for growth, for flowering, has also changed. The two, in fact, Seed and Soil, are one, each dependent upon the other for conditioning and quickening. Their existences are inextricably linked. Therefore, given this interdependence, aberrations or ‘knots’ in the energy field which constitutes our world have to be undone. Presently this requires a considerable amount of what we consider to be negative happenings.

The grace we are offered in this time of transition is that the new way has come into being with its applied and non-speculative cosmology, which is the tool of Knowledge by which we may understand the sense in the process, and at all times to be able to perceive the action of the one Supramental Shakti in the world, in control of everything that transpires on this planet.

The year upon whose threshold we stand, 1989, closes the formidable cycle of the 1980s and introduces the new enneatic cycle of the 1990s – the final one in this millennium. Needless to say, the times are deeply meaningful and to live the experiences which lie directly before us, an even greater effort is required than ever we have made before in our Yoga.
