ENERGY! Crisis in the Middle East, or War in the New Way

(The following text is a letter from Thea, dated 15.1.1991)

9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,

10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! For in one hour is they judgement come.

11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more…

16 And saying, Alas, alas that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!

17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,

18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, What city is like unto this great city!

19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate. (Chapter 18)

1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. (Chapter 21)

Your note was passed on questioning what astrology might reveal regarding the crisis the world faces, and whether I had written anything on the subject. No, I have not written anything specifically on the Iraqi situation, though for many months I have been featuring articles in VISHAAL which describe the process in cosmological terms – that is, the method to the madness within the framework of this applied cosmology. One of the earlier articles on this specific process was ‘Fission and Fusion’, which I think I gave you when you were here. (See, TVN, 4/2, June 1989.)

At this point, what to say? You see, there is indeed a new world being born but to set this fully on its way a lot of ‘residue’ has to be dissolved. And it is right now a question of dissolution or destruction as the method. The distinction is a fundamental part of the cosmological process. In fact, it is an ‘if’ already decided. It was a question mark up to the 1980s: destruction or dissolution.

In the former a lot of deadwood is eliminated but the operation is not centred. That is, it is not a part of an organic, organised process – a cosmos, quoi. At the same time there is an ACCELERATION OF TIME, as I call it. This means that these acts of destruction occur in a region of emptiness, so to speak, helter-skelter, here and there, stretched over time periods which may be long or short but which do not present any discernible connecting links. Time is not organised, not the ‘binding energy’ of the cosmos. Therefore we say that it is the ‘destroyer’ and not the creator – not an ally.

But in the 1980s a process was successfully undergone using precisely Time as the instrument; and a shift occurred. This was a hidden process but its ‘location’ in the multi-dimensional atmosphere gave it a privileged position. It was central. Indeed, it brought into being a centre.

The significance of such an occurrence is that events in the world are no longer disconnected. The interconnection of things, while true and irrefutable ever and always, entered into a decidedly new phase of expression: an acceleration in time and a containment of space. That is, a cosmos had come into being and all the events in the world on all levels formed a part of this cosmos. Things were DEFINED, put into their correct places. And it was rendered possible because this hidden ‘centre’ had emerged, – precisely the centre that was seen to be missing in Yeats’ apocalyptic vision.

So, the point is, the centre holds or began to hold on a global scale in the 1980s. This brought an entirely different equation about and the effects of this shift were discernible everywhere. However, on the surface the signals were confusing. To those ignorant of the process and its gains, while there were some obvious signs of a decisive shift there were others which seemed to indicate a worsening disintegration. This was accompanied worldwide by a sense of helplessness, as if the world were caught in a vortex, slipping down into some ominous Unknown; events were set in motion which no one seemed capable of analysing, much less of controlling. That phase of the process culminated at the very close of the decade of the 1980s.

I repeat nonetheless that there is a method to the madness, a process. It entails a shift from the tactic of destruction to that of dissolution. For a while, how long I cannot say just yet, the world must experience this painful situation. To all appearances it is no different than the old way. The casualties appear to be the same, the tolls no less severe and perhaps more than what we have experienced in past conflagrations and natural catastrophes. But this is not at all so. True, there continues to be war, death, bloodshed and human misery of all kinds. But what has to be understood is that this is the RESIDUE I referred to earlier. These are the trappings of the old order which is in the process of dying.

The question always asked of me is, How is the new to take its place centrestage when the ‘space’ is occupied by the old order and the play-out seems entirely in that court? You see, the point is that we are always dealing with ENERGY. This is something few can accept; and therefore only a very few can truly understand what is transpiring and participate in the establishment of the new order. Everyone is caught up in the periphery. According to the majority of human beings, that is solely where the real is found. And when we are dealing with war and devastation, it is very easy to lose sight of the energy level where the shifts actually occur which then may have a bearing on those externals. The horrors of the obvious are a very great distraction, so great that humanity has been imprisoned in these external dimensions for many thousands of years.

In terms of this APPLIED COSMOLOGY one cannot remain closeted in the periphery, if at all there is a desire to help bring about change. One has to go deep, much deeper. One has to make contact with that Centre, or with the only dimension where we can come face to face with the Real. Only in that sacred ‘space’ can any true change be initiated. It is the space where change is born. But that ‘space’ is within the reach of anyone, anywhere in the world. However, I am not referring to a spiritual experience. It is something quite different, a THIRD thing beyond spirituality or science.

To return to the question, destruction or dissolution, in the latter there is a controlled dismantling. And Time is the agent in the process. The distinction is fundamental. Given the existence of a Centre now, it is entirely possible to predict the successful establishment of the new order. The ‘purpose’ or ‘seed’ of that order lies precisely in the centremost centre of the Centre! Therefore, knowing that this exists, one faces the future not with optimism but with CERTITUDE.

At the same time, one realises that the mechanism for the organic growth of that Seed to full maturity must be respected. To be precise, there are layers to be dealt with in the periphery of this ‘cosmos’. You see, when we are dealing with a collective, global order and not one involving merely an individual or even an elite group of individuals, there are practical matters to be considered. The field is only one: our planet Earth. If we talk about a new world order which perforce must be global at this stage of technological, scientific advance, then we mean that this order has to arise in that single Earth-field. But the field is overtaken by the old. This none can deny. So, where is the ‘space’ for the new? All the tools for reconstruction, for creating or bringing into being this new order are part and parcel of the old structure. What then are we to do?

The answer lies in this applied cosmology and the mechanism it reveals of a process whereby the old, or the negative, is USED by the Centre to further its purpose. The key is the control over happenings which appear to be destructive and appear to conform to the old senseless pattern, but in effect are quite different. The difference, I repeat, lies in a CENTRE which now exists because Time is the ally and creator and no longer the destroyer. Christian scripture hinted at this in ‘The Revelation’ of St. John, Chapter 9, where the evil power is named Destroyer.

But what exactly is Time up to? The point is that ENERGY is locked in Time. The Russian physicist, Nikolai Kozyrev, caught this point in his work with time as energy. Indeed, these peripheral sheaths enveloping the world consciousness are residues of energy. The field is one, so we intend to establish this new world order in that single field. But, pray tell, what are we to do when the space is already occupied by these sheaths, these layers of compacted energy? In other words, they have to be a part of the process in some way because of the oneness of the field. The order is to be established on earth, not in some subtle dimension or a heaven beyond or in some other galaxy. It is a practical problem and the solution is equally practical: the new makes use of the old, or rather, it makes use of the release of energy for the acceleration.

If Time contains that formidable reserve of energy which Kozyrev deduced would be more potent than any nuclear weapon in existence, how can we release it? And if it is not to be a repetition of the old way where new discoveries of energy sources served simply the old and the method of destruction, then what is the answer? More significantly, the turning point for the world, given the destructive power available, signals the end of our civilisation if it is put to use at this point. So, the end of the line was reached in this century: creation or destruction.

What occurred in the 1980s eliminated destruction as an ‘option and, what is more, it set on its way the new process, or the new power. That is, the emergence of a Centre, critically located in time and space, allowed for a release of the energy in those sheaths which would be the binding energy of the new cosmos and permit ACCELERATION of the process itself. Thus, what we see as destruction is merely dissolution of those layers and a global, controlled release of the compressed time-energy which constitutes this substance. In other words, in the 1980s a realignment was achieved (interestingly, it coincided with the rise of Gorbachev to power), a new AXIS came into being which shifted time, as it were. It created an entirely new equation whereby the Past was no longer a tomb.

I am using terms which appear symbolic or metaphoric. But this is not so. Please take this quite literally. The Past gives up its ‘dead’. That is, the realignment produces a harmonisation of Time whereby NO RESIDUE is captured by the ‘tomb’ (past), for it is the residue which creates crusts that resist pressure for change and therefore impose the old way of destruction upon the world: the pressure is exerted by the cosmic interaction of energies on these crusts, according to the evolutionary stage of a species and its civilisation, – that is, they undergo a hardening as ‘time moves on’ in the old way, without the new alignment, and turning points arrive in civilisation when this hardening can no longer be tolerated. An external symptom of the problem is the rise of fundamentalism, dogmatism, and a number of other isms – or also of cries of freedom, independence, and so forth. These are all responses to one thing: pressure exerted on the crusts.

Thus, when Time is the ally and no longer the destroyer, the Past ‘gives up its dead’, as ‘The Revelation’ so wisely foretold in Chapter 20. This has been interpreted to mean the end of the world and the last judgement. But its real meaning is the above: no more old-time residue. What comes to an end is the old order. Indeed, the rise of the dead occurs but it is from the tomb of the past (referred to as ‘the sea’ in ‘The Revelation’) where this residue of energy has been accumulating and becoming an intolerable weight which can finally destroy the world.

However, when the cosmological process is known and its mechanism set in motion, then a controlled release of the energy in those layers (‘tombs’) MUST SERVE THE PURPOSES OF THE CENTRE because the shift has occurred, chaos has become cosmos. That is, for a time in the transitional phase, accompanying the release is a process of dissolution. I repeat, to the surface view these are no different from past acts of destruction. But to ‘one who sees’ it is an entirely different happening. The disintegration we witness and the minor and major events throughout the world which seem to confirm that the old is still entrenched and fully in command, are merely releases from those sheaths of ‘frozen time-energy’. The formula is precise and that energy then serves two purposes: to hasten the collapse or disintegration of the old and to accelerate the establishment of the new.

These happenings are recognisable by a particular time equation. There have been many over the past decade: Chernobyl, Bhopal, the October 19, 1987 Crash, the earthquake in Armenia, then in California on 17 October 1989 at 5:04, as well as the collapse of the Berlin Wall, of communism, etc. And now the Iraqi crisis. The equation indicates the presence of the control, and, as you can see, it straddles many areas of existence and ideologies: right or left, black or white are not the issue. There is only one: CONTROL.

So you see, with this vision into the heart of things, it is not possible to vibrate to happenings in the old way, to get worked up, to interfere in the external dimension where the play-out of this release is being effectuated. One can only act upon these events in the Centre because that is where the course of events is determined.

The old creation is dying and in the process it is serving a noble purpose: it is releasing the energies compressed in those layers and it is therefore causing an  accelerated rise of the New – a quicker pace. It is as if the old creation were something on the order of a compost pit wherein a rich manure is being concocted and which, when applied to the soil in the field, will accelerate growth of the new Time and Times – a new civilisation. It is not a question of indifference to human suffering; it is simply knowledge, and conservation of energy and its utilisation where and when it can have an impact in the Real.

As for the situation in the Middle East, I wish only to draw your attention to its unusual character. Has there ever been a process leading to war as measured and at the same time as exposed as this one? In the old way a key ingredient in conflicts has usually been surprise. This is entirely absent now. It is all hashed out in the open. But, more important, we witness a singular conglomeration of forces centred on one target. That is, in the higher vision, this is no LINEAR struggle, or a binary alignment. It is as if Iraq stood at the centre of a circle with a periphery moving in from all sides. This is indeed how it is in the more hidden dimension of the conflict. The colossal destructive power which constitutes a formidable aspect of the ‘residue’ is collected in a single field and the playout (for the purpose of dissolution) is confined to that arena. A key feature, however, is the emptiness of the focus or the central target. This emptiness is determined by the absence of a ‘purpose’. Indeed, it is a circular operation but converging on a centre that is a void. Into that Void great chunks of the old sheath fall. The irrational behaviour we witness – that is, the obstinacy and self-destruct postures – can be understood when the instruments are seen as select, chosen tools to serve in the operation of a controlled, measured, concentration of energy collapsing into a void. In the process a ‘nectar’ is released, as Indian mythology describes in the churning of the great Ocean (of Time). This Nectar is indeed the release of Time.

Peace movements across the globe understandably cry: NO BLOOD FOR OIL. But the point is, How else to force a convergence of this sort? An element has to be used which will elicit this concerted response. It is not exactly a question of a perverse imbalance of priorities, a conflict for something so ignoble as oil. It is simply that oil is the tool to bring about this convergence, this collection in that great Middle-Eastern cauldron where the old must be made to give up its ghost/’dead’/energy.

And finally there is a most important feature in the affair: In this new cosmology ‘the symbol is the thing symbolised’. Thus, the process I am describing involves ENERGY. The Middle-Eastern conflict centres on ENERGY, from 1973 gaining momentum to the point where this energy issue seems to be causing a conflagration the likes of which may not be fully calculated. Yes, the symbol is the very thing symbolised, for the energy-symbol of the old and dying world is black gold. On the other hand, the ‘symbol’ of the energy released by the new Time is pure Gold, or the supramental Gnosis. India is where the latter is found. This too has been indicated in the Middle-Eastern scriptures: they speak of the location of the Tree of Life lying beyond the eastern gate of the Garden of Eden,

‘And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and live for ever;

‘Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

‘So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.’

                                                                        Genesis 3, 22-24

But this is only the beginning of the tale. The very last book of the New Testament, ‘The Revelation’, describes that Tree in its final Chapter. And it is the description of the zodiac, or the divine measure of the Year, the Divine Maya of the ancient Veda: Time’s sacred script and the revealer of its inscrutable processes:

‘And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

‘In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of nations.

‘And there shall be no more curse; but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:

‘And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.

‘And there shall be no more night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.’

Culture and Cosmos – 2, Part 1 Cosmic Harmonies in Hindu Civilisation and Society

A turning point in Hindu civilisation has been reached. The choice is as clear as the indications given by the conditions surrounding this formidable moment.

In previous articles and in my books, I have discussed this question of choosing – or, as I call it, the act of choosing. It is an essential ingredient at the turning point because the mechanics of the act involve a release of energy. Indeed, the act of choosing is simply for the purpose of carrying out this release. The energy that ‘escapes’ is the new addition which alters the alchemy of forces in turbulent interaction. But in reality there is no choice as such; the entire mechanism is artificial when seen from a higher plane of perception. This becomes obvious when the ‘right’ choice is made and miraculously a shift occurs transforming the entire panorama, in some cases instantly. Yet at a lower level, or rather on the plane where the issue is being played out, the choice is not at all fictitious. Hard facts accompany our act of choosing – deaths, bloodshed, nations disintegrating amidst turmoil and confusion. These are the realities we live with today, at this momentous time of choosing. Nonetheless, they are not real issues and we are therefore permitted to call them fictitious in that the real exists only in the heart of the process. From there waves are thrown up and out which create a ‘field’, and it is in this field that most of the issues apparently of central importance can be located. Their function in the process is quite other than what is imagined and is important in its own ways which this article will attempt to clarify.

When a turning point is reached circumstances conspire to create conditions which force us into a position demanding an act of choosing; in other words, which force us to release energy. This is what is now demanded in India: an act of choosing for the purpose of releasing energy. When it is an unconscious act, it will be accompanied by destructive manifestations proportionate to the degree of unconsciousness prevailing. When awareness of the real issues is present, the process is one of dissolution and not destruction. That is, outer sheaths where the energy had become compacted into hardened masses are dissolved, dissipated. In unconsciousness entailing destruction, blows are inflicted on the sheath to force a breakthrough. This is transposed onto the human stage as acts of violence, bloodshed, death. Or else, in the economic sphere we may witness the collapse of economies, or in politics the complete collapse of systems or, in more extreme cases, revolutions with their attending turmoil, agitation and death.

India has reached such a turning point. But the sheath to be dissolved is a residue accumulated over 2500 years. Ignorance of this fact is what encourages a focus on issues which are irrelevant at worst and peripheral at best. In other words, we must view the state of a civilisation as a growth of many layers; these are indeed sheaths – but formed of TIME ENERGY. This process is the experience of individuals as well as groupings of collective consciousness – for example the Hindu civilisation. The more mature a civilisation, the easier it is to perceive the process, or the more starkly defined its turning points.

Thus we perceive a residue accumulated in the sheath surrounding the core of Hinduism. The truth-essence of that core is the Sanatan Dharma, the eternal truth or law. But being eternal does not mean fixity of form which implies fossilisation. Indeed, this lies at the heart of the issue and is the crux of the turning point. Eternal in time (and there can be no concept of eternity which does not include time) implies a ceaseless flow; that is, a truth which evolves NEW forms in a process that is entirely true to the essence. In Hinduism this is very clear, unlike what we encounter in religions. The Sanatan Dharma contains an in-built system of renewal unique on this Earth in that it forms the undisputed core of the Dharma or the backbone of the structure. This is the Line of Ten Avatars.

Hinduism’s Alliance with Time

The Line refers to an evolutionary mechanism which USES Time for the action of evolving new forms around a truth-core. The Avatar’s purpose is exclusively this: he or she takes birth under certain time conditions which allow the Avatar to evolve, by the aid of Time in the evolutionary process, these new involucrums. In the process and if there are hardened crusts of impacted residue, this Agent of Time must undo those crusts.

Two factors may complicate the matter. One is when the Avatar is not recognised and society opposes his evolutionary/revolutionary work; the other is when very special conditions prevail which result in unusually hard crusts, or extreme masses of compacted energy residue. Both these situations describe the happenings surrounding the work of the present Avatar in this 9th Manifestation.

The second of the two is worth elucidating: the Line consists of ten, it is known. But what is not known is that they are a string of births stretched over many millennia but nonetheless thoroughly linked through the substance of the missions to be accomplished. The Avatars’ work, though spread out over vast aeons, is one process with one finality: the establishment of the reign of Truth, or the Golden Age. In Hinduism it is known as the Satya Yuga.

Thus, and this is fundamental, the movement works through the Line toward a culmination. This is supremely clear if we know the heart of evolution’s purpose. We observe then how each Avatar has added a portion to the mosaic. Sri Aurobindo has carefully explained this in his writings on the Ten Avatars. However, he dwelt primarily on the specific contributions of the 7th and 8th Avatars – Sri Ram and Sri Krishna. Interestingly, he had less to say about the 9th, except to state that Kalki would come ‘to correct the error of the Buddha’. On the other hand, we have the Puranas which refer to this 9th Avatar Buddha as the ‘ruse of the Supreme’, meant to ‘mislead the asura-seekers’.

These references have been made use of to support the contention that Buddhism was a persecuted faith in India and pursued by the Brahminical caste to its final ejection from the country. It is a debate which has surfaced forcefully in this decade due to two factors: one is the Ayodhya Temple episode with the intelligentsia seeking to convince the nation, for its own designs, that the mosque occupying the site was built over the ruins of a Buddhist shrine which had been destroyed to give way to a Hindu temple; that is, that the Hindus had been the first to destroy and build; and second, the caste debate which has been brought to a tragic extreme by the policies of the former prime minister, V.P. Singh.

Regarding the first, certain points need to be clarified. It is doubtful that a Buddhist shrine occupied the site where the mosque now stands, but what might be the deeper purpose in casting this contention into the cauldron already replete with contentious forces? The purpose is to add substance to the theory of Brahminical intolerance and persecution of Buddhism out of a desire to maintain a hold over the out-caste masses as well as the lower echelons within the system. However, it has to be pointed out that if this desire of subjugation truly existed, Hinduism would not have evolved as it did over these past ten thousand years. It would have provided for itself the proper tools for suppression and dominance such as we find in religions. In Hinduism it is true that a degeneration set in, but this has little to do with Brahminical despotism as it has been elaborated by historians.

In the Dark Ages, the priests and men and women of Knowledge in Hindu civilisation knew that the Buddha was ‘the ruse of the Supreme’ and that though circumstances forced his insertion in the Line as the 9th Avatar, he was nothing of the sort. But exactly what his role might be was not understood, though it was clear that he was indeed connected to the Line in a most essential manner. Clarity could not prevail simply because this discovery involved the deepest essence of the true 9th Avatar’s mission, Sri Aurobindo, whose appearance was due many centuries into the future.

According to the cosmic harmonies, which provide the ‘credentials’ for the Line of Ten, the 9th could not have appeared at the time of the Buddha: time would not have permitted it. The Avatar appears in the portion of each Manifestation (consisting of 6480 years each) which belongs to Vishnu [see The Gnostic Circle]. Thus they are known as ‘Incarnations of Vishnu.’ This description is misleading unless one knows the fundaments of these harmonies.

Suffice to say, those persons of Knowledge who described the Buddha as the ruse of the Supreme were not far from the truth – however, it was a truth which would take over 1500 years to be clarified and proven. Those ‘Brahmins’, often a euphemism for realised souls or persons of Knowledge, were not persecutors of Buddhists; they were simply preceptors of something of the Cosmic Truth and the deeper workings of the Time-spirit. At the same time, the entry of an erroneous incarnation as the 9th created its own problems. To put it succinctly, in itself this act became the reason why the perception of the Cosmic Truth and its issuing harmonies was lost. The vision became clouded to the point where decisive links were missed, great chunks were subtracted from the greater mosaic that is Hinduism. Certain essential portions remained, indeed a CORE, but the veils began to collect around this core becoming denser as the Manifestation’s clock ticked away in its relentless and irreversible march into the Age of Vishnu, the period of culmination in this 9th Manifestation and the real time of appearance of the 9th Avatar. To be precise, Vishnu’s period in this 9th Manifestation began in 1926. His period prior to this was more than 6000 years ago. Thus, 6480 years separate the appearances of each Avatar in the Line. At about the midway point between the birth of the 8th, Sri Krishna, and the 9th, Sri Aurobindo, the ‘ruse of the Supreme’ appeared as a ‘shadow’ cast before the figure of the real 9th. This Shadow describes the residue. In that tenebrous sheath energies are accumulated which demand to be dissolved if at all the core-truth is to survive and continue propelled through the aeons by the Time-Spirit.

Questioning the Unquestionable

Yet there is far more to the matter and it will reveal just why a situation such as a ‘strategy of ruse’ arose in the course of the Line of Ten. That is, tradition does not refer to any other incarnation in this rather shocking fashion; or if it had proven necessary as a tactic, it is baffling that this should have centred on an incarnation of the spiritual status of the Buddha. This fact has left Hindu culture quite vulnerable in the face of attacks from a number of luminaries in different intellectual disciplines. There have been Asuras along the way, Rakshasas, and all sorts of embodiments of evil whom the Avatars have had to battle in the course of their missions. But there has never been a ‘ruse’ – that is, a truly SPIRITUAL figure of superior accomplishments as a false avatar yet universally accepted by Hindus themselves as one whose position as the 9th stands unquestioned. Indeed, to do so might appear as blasphemy to many, such has been the ingenuity of the ruse. But this questioning is part and parcel of the work of the true 9th. None before him, or indeed before he had victoriously accomplished his work, could hope to unravel the mystery or even realise and accept its existence.

At this stage, there is hardly a person in India who dares question this fundamental proposition: Gautam the Buddha was not the 9th Avatar and his insertion in the Line did indeed constitute a ruse, – or better said, a strategy.

The point is the Buddha was essential to the process described in the beginning of this discussion. He planted seeds in the collective consciousness of a movement which would result in the hardening of the crust, or the amassing of residue in the time-energy sheath of Hindu civilisation, destined to reach its maximum degree of density at the time of the appearance of the last Avatar in the Line.

The Satya Yuga is expressed by the 10th. Everything before that is a temporary circumstance to aid in the arrival of the Age of Truth. But let us be more specific.

Like the gestation of a cow, or a human being, 9 is the measure. Similarly, the Line of Ten follows the same measure: at the 9th the birth occurs. This means that everything or everyone prior to this 9th was simply a ‘month’ of the gestation (or stage in the evolution of consciousness on Earth). When we reach the 7th and 8th ‘months’ (Avatars), the foetus is quite well-formed – but it is still a foetus, ergo, unborn; nonetheless, it begins to reveal a character, it is able to house a soul and to serve as a form-vehicle at the time of birth. Well-formed though it may be at the 7th and 8th stages of the gestation, it is nonetheless a foetus. Time must fulfil itself and the gestation must be completed. Nine is the measure and sacred is the cow because she parallels the process: the progressive densification of the Light (‘go’ in Sanskrit, or ray). Furthermore, nothing can truly be known of the ‘body’ or the individualised attributes of the new-born until the actual birth. The time of this birth, gestated for a period of approximately 51,840 years, was the present period of Vishnu which started in 1926.

As pre-eminent instruments of the Time-Spirit, it is only in Vishnu’s periods that the Avatars can appear, for these are the Ages of Preservation. This particular and special Manifestation – the 9th of this Manifestation, was struck in 1926. It was the year Sri Aurobindo formally initiated his work: he withdrew to his room in that year and for 24 thereafter did a yoga of supreme concentration in order to see the ‘birth’ through successfully. The period of the true 9th had dawned upon India as the new Age had dawned on the cosmic horizon. This means that what Sri Aurobindo’s coming signified was the birth of the true and only real form of Hinduism. Or else, after his coming and this successful passage, his mission would produce an India that would be able to ‘see with NEW EYES’, for that is the meaning of the Coming.

The Birth of Guha, or the New Way

As time fulfils itself the involucrum surrounding the foetus begins to exert pressure; the waters press upon the foetus from all sides, contractions begin at a predetermined time and the ‘child’ comes forth. This Child is the 10th in the Line, the male-child Kartikeya, or Kalki. He comes as the War God, or with sword in hand, because the condition of the sheath requires this extreme power. The conditions accompanying his arrival are such that the crust is hardened to its maximum point of destiny. That point is reached in the second half of this century, culminating in the last three decades of the millennium, particularly in the 1990s. Only the power of the Sword will break the sac and permit the Birth. It is a cosmic process, a cosmological phenomenon. What this means is simply that the Age of Truth, the Satya Yuga, is ushered in by the Warrior of the Sanatan Dharma.

The reasons are obvious, the circumstances surrounding the Birth explain the position well; they do not lie. But the point is that when Knowledge does not illumine the path a stillborn creature may emerge due to the intensity of the force employed, in keeping with the cosmic process. In other words, the baby may be thrown out with the bath water. This, above all else, has to be avoided, for it is another ‘tactic’ in the strategy of the agents of Darkness: if the victory cannot be theirs, success will nonetheless attend their efforts by provoking a holocaust which will reduce Hindu civilisation to a shadow of itself, if it will survive at all. This can only be averted when the true and full process is known, which in turn informs us of the identity of these forces and how they operate.

Indeed, this is the key feature of the Satya Yuga: it is no longer a reign of ignorance, falsehood and half-light. Knowledge, the supreme Gnosis prevails, triumphs, forms the basis of the new order. Thus, to pretend to be instruments for this Birth without the mind and heart illumined by this truth-seeing is to delude ourselves pathetically. Our unknowing will simply prolong the reign of Ignorance and falsehood and may even be used to hasten the final collapse.

These are the veils that are pierced by the Sword of Truth which Kalki wields. Kalki is the symbol of the victorious Birth. The ‘ruse of the Supreme’ clouded this cosmic process in veils – protecting it as a foetus is protected by the maternal sac until its moment of birth arrives. At the same time, the veils themselves are the focus of an ever-increasing residue which must now be dissolved.

But is it to be done by DISSOLUTION or DESTRUCTION? This is the only question we may legitimately ask. Because the victorious birth has already taken place. Therefore it is no longer appropriate to question if the Child will be live or stillborn because Sri Aurobindo has already successfully accomplished his mission. The only ‘unknown’ at present is what means must be employed to allow for that Child, and no other, to emerge from behind the veils which continue to cover him in his form of Guha, the Hidden One.

Darkness before the Dawn

At a certain point in the evolution of Hindu society the correct deciphering of the cosmic script was lost. The result was adoption of a system of calendrical reckoning which threw the civilisation’s time measure off substantially. Hinduism could no longer locate the periods of Vishnu and by consequence determine the exact time of the appearance of the Avatar. It is safe to assume that the adoption of this inaccurate astronomical formula occurred around 300 AD. It is also safe to assume that this adoption was accompanied by the insertion of Gautam the Buddha into the Line of Ten: ‘ruse’ and miscalculation of time go hand-in-hand.

The time residue began to accumulate from that point onward; in the West during the same period, or 396 AD to be precise, there was a symbol-reflection of this lost measure in the cessation that year of the celebration of the Eleusinian Mysteries in praise of the Divine Mother and her daughter, the Kore (a counterpart of the Hindu Kumari).

The adoption of this inaccurate cosmic reckoning, accompanied by the insertion of a false Avatar in the Line, had the desired effect of weakening the foundations of Hinduism. Soon after invasions began in a civilisation weakened from within; Hinduism no longer had the power to ward off these forces since its binding energy had been dissipated. India was a united civilisation in the cosmic dimension of its collective expression and experience long before it became a united nation during the British Raj. And this unity resided in Hinduism and its oneness with the Cosmic Truth. But having lost that connection, the pillars of both the civilisation and the physical nation were attacked and the momentum increases, just as the wrong measure permits a time residue to accumulate with each passing year.

Thus we note that by this wrong formula India marks its cosmic age at an interval of 1656 years behind the rest of the world. In other words, according to these calculations with respect to the true cosmic dial, India’s reckoning became frozen in the year 270 AD. The measure is a colossal 1656 years off the mark, into the past. It is during this span of more than 1500 years that the Hindu civilisation has been experiencing a slow and steady decline, with no hope of immediate reprieve since the period of Vishnu is not expected to dawn until the fourth millennium of our era!

Throughout these centuries Hinduism has not been able to express new forms of itself and make use of its in-built mechanism for change. Until, that is, the arrival of the true 9th Avatar and his mission as Mahakala began in the early part of this century. His foremost aim was to set on its way the process of ‘correcting the error’. However, correction is not simple insofar as the wrong formula affects the passage of the cosmic year as well as the Solar/Earth year. For example, this dislocation is an annual feature of Hindu celebrations, one of the main ones being the Makar Sankranti, or the Sun’s entry into India’s ruling sign, Capricorn. This is celebrated on 15 January, or 23 days late. In such an atmosphere of confusion the really inspiring fact is that Hinduism has managed to survive for as long as it has under these conditions which affect the very heart and soul of her culture – that is, the cosmic harmonies which form the indisputable basis of the civilisation.

The formula is precise: when the Shadow’s arena is the play-out destruction is the method. In terms of the cosmic process, that Shadow means the past. In view of the above discussion of the lost time-measure, it can be appreciated that at the heart of today’s struggle lies an attempt to draw the hands of the cosmic timepiece to their correct position in the Time-Spirit’s clock of the passage of the Earth’s Ages and bring about a perfect harmony of time and space, or the experience of the Satya Yuga. This can only be done through the knowledge provided by the Avataric Line.

Thus, the turning point of our times – today, not tomorrow, urgently upon us in these very days – is the choice: destruction or dissolution as the way. Must the Sword be used to cut the sheath vehemently, violently and perhaps fatally; or is it to be used simply to pierce the veils which hide Guha and through this opening to allow an infiltration of his Light to dissolve the shadow in the tenebrous corridors of Time’s residue.

It is clear that the necessity to use a symbol of the past as the rallying point for the reestablishment of the Dharma indicates a regression. Time moves on. Ram was the 7th Avatar. His mission was fulfilled many hundreds of years ago – nay, thousands, in the 7th Manifestation. Therefore, to speak of or fight for a ‘Ram Rajya’ is a contradiction in terms. It can never come to pass. It is not destined to come to pass. The Time-Spirit will simply not permit it.

But the Time-Spirit may use the symbol to AWAKEN SLEEPING ENERGIES. This has indeed transpired. However, it is at this point that the dramatic moment of choosing is revealed in its true light or purpose: focus on a symbol of the past within the context of Hinduism is, lamentably, a denial of the core of the Sanatan Dharma. It indicates that the ‘ruse’ was successful and still holds sway.

The Line of Ten means precisely a forward march, always stabilised on this Truth-Core, an experience of immobility in the midst of the hurrying pace of Time’s formidably accelerated mobility, as the years unwind and the millennium nears its end. That is, with a firm foundation upholding the progression which provides the mechanism of renewal for the harmonious experience of stability and change. It is a process which alone produces harmonisation and integration required for unity in diversity.

The Ayodhya issue may be a rallying point; it may serve to awaken energies dormant for the past 2000 years; it may even help us to focus our attention on the most vital feature of Hinduism: the Line of Ten Avatars. It may serve to revitalise the Hindu spirit and soul now weighed down by the thick layers cast upon it by invading ideologies far removed from its own truth-core. And this may instill the courage needed to cast those crusts aside definitively. But it cannot be the finality, the goal. It is merely a tool, the result of a totality of prevailing conditions which imposed this regression into the past.

If the Time-Spirit were to permit a plunge into the cosmic residue of frozen energies, Hinduism would not be the Sanatan Dharma. It would be a religion and hence entirely time-bound, with no inbuilt mechanism for renewal. Religions have no such mechanism for authentic change which respects the original substance – especially those that uphold their God as the one and only. Thus they must invariably experience fundamentalist upsurges which are the only possible responses to the pressure for change and progress in the absence of a cosmic mechanism. Similar to all religions, under those shadowy conditions Hinduism would be subject to fossilisation if it sought to preserve its truth-core.

With the exception of the evolutionary process itself, Hinduism is one of the rare expressions on Earth of a progressively unfolding cosmic Truth. Indeed, because its soul is that very Cosmic Truth, it is one with the deepest purpose of the planetary evolution. Hinduism can therefore be identified as the vahana (vehicle) of the Earth’s own soul, a truth exquisitely conveyed in the ancient Vedic symbol of the white steed, Agni, carrying Usha, the divine Dawn, across the horizon of the Earth’s awakening cosmic day.

What is transpiring in India today is not a sudden development catching us unaware. The cosmic harmonies have been indicating the arrival of this turning point in the present decade. These harmonies go very deep in their indications, deeper than is hinted at in the surface happenings. That is, they illumine our understanding to the degree that we see a nation caught up in peripheral struggles. Even the present disintegration of India is peripheral insofar as it is simply a reflection of a missing link between the nation’s outer political, social and economic forms of expression and the innermost truth-core of Hindu civilisation. The absence of that link is the sole cause for the present turmoil and permits the periphery to spin off in every direction. It is not held together by the power of the Core.

Similarly, the questions being asked by intellectuals in many different disciplines and by people in all walks of life concerning secularism, minorityism, majorityism, democracy, communalism, fundamentalism, or national integration, caste and all the rest, are simply further ‘ruses’. The choice before India is only one: the past or the present, the old or the new. The 9th and 10th Avatars hold the key to the new future of Hinduism, as the Line of Ten has always held the key to the reestablishment of the Dharma.

Cow & Horse as Vedic Symbols

Caroselle - The Gourmand's Cheese (Logo)

The following is a hymn to Sri Aurobindo’s very wise dictum

‘ALL LIFE IS YOGA’

That I have given the head of a horse for the label of our cheese and not a cow, may be perplexing; the latter would be the more common choice. The explanation can be found in an old, ancient Vedic perception which, to my knowledge, has now been lost. At the same time, I will give the reason for the name CAROSELLE and its cosmic background.

The Cow is the Light—‘go’ in Sanskrit, or ray (of sunlight). But this cow/light is unformed, spread out, unmaterialised, so to speak. In other words, it is the primordial Energy out of which or with which the material universe and all things therein are made. The agent for this action is the Divine Maya, the Vedic formative power of the Absolute.

On the other hand, the Horse is precisely that formed product. For this reason these symbols—Cow and Horse—go hand in hand. They can never really be separated in the language of symbols for the true Knowledge. But in India they have been separated for all practical purposes. The emasculated condition of the ancient Dharma is reflected in the fact that only the Cow is actively worshipped. The Horse (and by consequence the vir energy) is relegated to a secondary position, if at all it is given any consideration. The reason for this lies in the distortion of the spiritual experience in ages gone by. Today it claims to be ‘vedic’, but in name only: the essence of the experience has been lost, for only the dematerialised Energy, or the Spirit, is sacred. The rest, all the things of this material universe are now ‘maya’, or illusion. Not the divine Maya of the ancient Veda, but Shankara’s undivine, veiled and murky interfering substance. Simultaneously, with the increasing chasm between Cow and Horse reaching a culmination in our times, the Horse lost all connection with the Cow. In other words, the Cow ‘up there’ was fine; down here it was all too unruly, wild and unredeemable: Matter was something to shun, that materialised Energy lost its sacredness and fell into the realm of the profane.

I do believe there is no one in India today, or anyone anywhere else versed in Indian culture, who can clarify this important point and draw these sacred connections. At the same time, this severance, I repeat, describes the loss of the dharma—or at least its power to remake itself and imprint its truth upon the human psyche. In this task the energy of the Hero (Horse) is demanded.

However, we do not have to go far afield for confirmation of these facts I am presenting because this same truth is preserved in the Brihad Aranyaka Upanishad. This Upanishad begins with the description of the universe in the form of a horse. It may be pointed out that this particular Upanishad is one of the oldest, hence closer to the ancient Vedic spirit wherein Agni, that supreme symbol-godhead, was often described as a white Horse; and in this form he was the divine Usha’s vahana as she ushered in the Dawn—of the day, of the year, of the age.

It may also be pointed out that these introductory ‘horse verses’ are often left out of translations and commentaries. It became rather difficult and embarrassing when those old chaps got so explicitly ‘pagan’.

Mention of Usha, the divine Dawn, brings us to another formidable truth of the Brihad Aranyaka. Time is mentioned therein as ‘the breath of the Horse sacrificial’. The divine Measure (or Maya) of the Earth is the year. Thus Cow and Horse in their combined symbolism represent the sacrificial Year. Time gestates that Energy (Cow/Light) and forms are thereby evolved, imbued with prana (the ‘breath’ of the Horse). The destiny of all living things hinges on this cosmic process. Thus Cow and Horse are EVERYWHERE, in the macrocosm and in the microcosm. The only problem is that in our times the connection between the two has been lost—hence the prevalence of a very divisive, separative consciousness throughout—even in the Godmen who themselves have lost this connection and continue repeating what are now just vacant phrases, though hallowed they may be. They must be instilled with that ‘breath’ once more.

The Festival of Light—which the true tradition accurately locates between 22 December and 5 January, with particular emphasis on the first five days of the year as the seed time—is an homage to the above process: the primordial Energy (Cow/Light) is given the vahana of the year (Horse/Time) to materialise itself in the creative formative process, bearing great respect for the gestation period of 9 months (both cow and human). Thus it is that Usha inaugurates the year (or the day) by entering on the white Steed, Agni. She brings in those sacred Rays for material formation. And thus it is that Agni is the divine Will working in the world. The essence of all material creation—its very soul—is Will. Destiny is the motor of that Will, or its ‘intent’.

Now on to CAROSELLE and cheese. The apparently lowly and simple carousel, or merry-go-round, was an inspired vision by some creature obviously obsessed with the cosmic Machine. Thus the movements of the horses in the merry-go-round are all descriptive of motions in our solar system: the horse turns around its pole (like the Earth spinning on its axis in 24 hours); it moves up and down (like the Earth’s top-like motion marking off the cosmic Age of 25,920 years and also connected to the Moon’s 27 day cycle); the horse moves around the centre of the carousel—just like the Earth does around the central Sun (in the year of 365 days). These movements can also be enlarged to describe galactic movements, as well as the entire universal dance around a single ‘centre’.

All of this deals with movement—hence the symbol is the Horse, renowned for swiftness, speed and forward motion. So, a carousel of horses is a very apt description of the universal harmony, just like the Brihad Aranyaka Upanishad: the essence of the cosmic manifestation is movement, ergo the Horse.

I had named our dairy Swati Panth, a Sanskrit term for the Galaxy, the Milky or ‘Pearly’ Way—the legend being that a drop of rain falling into an oyster during the month of ‘Swati’ would develop into a pearl. This name was given to the dairy in honour of my first white horse whom I had named Swati, in keeping with his pearly whiteness (as well as the fact—though unknown at the time of naming—that he reached me during the Swati nakshatra). And his appearance was exactly linked to our cow, Deepa, conceived on Deepavali of 1981. Together this Cow and Horse marked off the measure of the year from 1981 to 1982.

This should clarify why the logo bears the head of a white Horse, and a carousel horse at that.

The process of cheese-making is in itself a sacred operation. One is creating a cosmos. One takes the milk of the cow in its ‘unformed’ state and one creates thereof a form—from this primordial energy. When it hardens (usually in a round mould like the universal bodies), it is then the Horse—for the Horse is that prana/time-breath without which the process goes nowhere, the symbol par excellence of movement, hence Time. In the cheese-making process movement is initiated, brought into being, accelerated. One is creating a cosmos (the cheese). One is taking that light-energy from the Cow and by the help of Time’s breath (‘of the Horse sacrificial’)—out comes the CHEESE!

Deeply perceiving in this moment one is brought to the vision of ‘the one in the all and the all in the one’. I am the All, all is in me, I contain the all while being contained in the All.

But how does this come about? How can it be?

It can be by a warp, a curve, whereby the farthest is indeed the closest, whereby all things that on one plane appear to be separate and distanced from each other, are, in fact, one and together. The Gnostic Circle gives us the image in the 0/9 [point]. But this relation only exists in a full cosmos, no matter what dimensions we give to it. As I have written, it must bear the essential trinity in its being. This then constitutes a cosmos. However, added to this is the question of a conscious awareness of the inherent trinity, which then adds the fourth element of integrality.

In a cosmos of whatever dimensions this curve is inherent. All is in each part. This stands especially evident in material creation. That is, in material creation we see this curve and the resultant oneness. We can become conscious of the oneness. For now we are blocked from this vision by the delimitations of Mind which gives rise to our erroneous concepts of Time and Space, because these appear to distance things. But, in fact, it is by the agency of Time and Space that created things experience oneness. These are the dimensions by which this ‘curve’ is effectuated. Without Time and Space we cannot have the concrete experience of oneness, we cannot be conscious of the essential unity, which incorporates all dimensions of being. We must necessarily exclude the material universe. And in so doing how can there be the real experience of God? It is an impossibility.

Within my being I am the essential trinity. We are all this essential trinity. We are all embodiments of the Supermind, albeit veiled. I had this experience nine years ago: the Three in One, exactly as Sri Aurobindo describes it in regard to Supermind, as the constituent reality of Supermind or the Truth-Consciousness as a creative power. I have it now in the perception of my individuality and yet my totality. I am the all, I am in the all, the all is in me.

Travelling on ‘beams’ of time will make it possible to visit distant galaxies – because it is in that dimension that the ‘curve’ takes place, or the contraction: thus therein or thereby Space is altered. That which is farthest becomes nearest.

It is thus that we have the physical experience of God, of the creative power of the Absolute.

In this light we can understand how spirituality has taken us very far away from the concrete experience, how in so doing it has denied the very purpose of material creation… We, as the material creation, on a whole are the farthest point removed from the Absolute. Yet by the very properties inherent in the material creation we are the closest. That is, we have the possibility of the conscious experience of unity and oneness.

No other level of Absolute Being can have this experience. Therefore while spirituality, in one form or another, continues to deny the instrument of Creation, it postpones for the material creation its legitimate and destined right to be conscious of Truth and Reality.

In the dimension of Time acting upon the field of Space this oneness is experienced. Time curves Space. This is the profound message of the Indian image of (vertical) Shakti standing upon (horizontal) Shiva, prostrate and inert. Space is contained by the contraction of Time. It is made a cosmos by this action. Thus all created things follow the same pattern. That is, all of the material dimension must know the same process. It is Time that renders each thing a cosmos, no matter what its dimensions.

Indeed, in our dimension of Being, this material universe or stratum, Time is the direct power of Supermind: it controls, it instills sense, it fulfills purpose. To deny Time then is to never experience the truth of existence.

With the Gnostic Circle I have the key that turns the lock and opens the door to this immense reality. In it one perceives, with relation to our world, our Earth, at this particular point on the scale of evolution, the formula for the period that constitutes a cosmos. That is, within nine months and the one year the ‘curve’ is closed (and then re-opened). Yet it is not enough to know the formula of the Year. This has been known in Vedic times. It is knowing the periods within that time, that mark off the stages of ‘the journey travelled’ that is all important. The harmony consists of parts within the whole. We must know the notes if we would play the piece. These ‘notes’ are revealed to us in the Gnostic Circle (the ‘rays’ of the Vedic Sun); and at the same time, because we perceive them within the whole, we ‘hear’ the entire tune.

Therefore the ancient Vedic Seers stressed the wisdom of the Sacrifice of the Year, – which contains the totality of the notes of our world. But who is there who can see this today? None. They deny their own wisdom…

Each cosmos has its own laws, its own relationships. For man the formula is based on 9: 9 months of Time bring forth the One of Space/form to constitute a new cosmos. The 9 for man offers him the possibility of creating a new cosmos. In terms of a child this is a fact, but it is equally a fact in other spheres, in the sphere of a creation of whatever order.

Yet, can a thing be created that does not correspond to a seed of Truth? That is, can this formula be misused? No, it cannot, because it can only bring forth what is inherent in itself. A creation that does not conform to the Truth-Seed is an impossibility, no matter what we see about us, what darkness, what suffering, what apparent aberrations.

For other dimensions in other worlds, other species, the relationship changes. But this is determined by the potential of conscious perception. The more conscious the species the more probable is this law to be encountered.

The basic formula is: Zero giving rise to the Three which produces the One. Sri Aurobindo puts it this way: out of the One comes the trinity and not vice-versa. And this is his definition for the creative Supermind:

‘It established a Trinity, not arriving like Mind from the three to the One, but manifesting the three out of the One – for it manifests and develops – and yet maintaining them in the unity – for it knows and contains.’

Yet Sri Aurobindo is calling the One here the Unity. My contribution is an all-important difference: I call this One he refers to the Zero. Thus I have been able, by this difference, which is no real difference at all, to make the link with Time, and hence with Matter. And going a step farther, I have linked the 0 with the 9, shown their essential and effective oneness in our flow of time. And this has brought the 0 radically into Matter. That is, the Supermind is rooted or revealed therein, and the process of its creative power is unveiled.

My further contribution is the One – that hidden Fourth (thereby completing the OM in manifestation). Coming from the Zero the supramental Trinity then produces out of itself the true 1. And this 1 is, in turn, a new manifestation of the 0. That is, it is the ‘masked Transcendent’ who takes birth in Time, or is manifest in Matter.

In his rebirth as the One it means that he stands on a different poise. This is essential to understand. He is no longer descending now. He is now leading the ascension, the upward curve. (It is the truth the Christians tried to capture in the death and resurrection of the Christ; yet the Father had not ‘descended into clay’, thus their perception was an error and does not correspond to the cosmic truth. The Supermind had not manifested, its time had not come, the Trinity had not incarnated and the One was not the Son crucified.)

Therefore in the tale of Kartikeya, this ‘child’ is known as the ‘leader of the hosts’, even as Agni is the ‘leader’, for the two are one. And the same goes for his counterpart in the Christian scriptures recorded by St. John. They all come to ‘lead the army’, the ‘hosts of the Lord’. That is, he leads in the upward journey (so many are the hymns of Agni that come to mind), or the evolution of the new species. He marks the great curve in Time, whereby the same experience I have been describing for myself, individually, is lived on the level of the species: his coming marks the beginning of the Collective Realisation.

This is the truly great Reversal. And it is done. Nothing can now change that, neither belief nor disbelief, for these attitudes are products of the lower hemisphere of being. They are mental modes. They do not correspond to the Real-Idea, or the Truth that is.

Thus the Fourth is characterised by this ascending movement. He joins the evolution, as it were. By the Father’s sacrifice he creates this reversal and he takes his stance in the poise of the ascending movement of Evolution, after having himself initiated the descending movement of Involution. Only he who is that can accomplish this task. None other. He must carry this out in his own being, by his birth, his ‘death’ or sacrifice, and rebirth in perfect attunement with time. It is all a play in time, for time is that curving or contracting power by which creative principle alone this great Reversal is made possible.

Thus the Mother’s chamber is a ‘womb of Time’ and conforms to all these newly-revealed aspects of the Work. Indeed, it contains all these secrets, and only when these secrets are known can we know the Chamber. It stands as ‘the symbol of the future realisation’, to use the Mother’s words, precisely because it holds the great key to the creative power of the supramental Time. It reveals the Divine Measure of the Year. It is this secret that has reached us from Vedic times. It is this redemption that we now bring about: in redeeming Time we redeem Matter. The birth of the One who is the Fourth heralds the new species of a redeemed matter.

Being micro-cosmoses each individual can live this same process that is lived by the incarnate triune power that produces the One or the Fourth. They live it for the evolution; the individual can, and shall, live it in his or her own being. As he is the embodiment of Sachidananda he must himself live the Sacrifice and produce the One.

The Supramental Beings are those who live this conscious experience in the dimension of material creation. And in it lies the key to Immortality – not only of consciousness but of physical being. Indeed, there can be no true experience of Supermind without the dimension of the densest element incorporated in the process. Physical immortality is the signal of the completed Work.

A Communication

Is there a way out of the armaments race and potential destruction?

Yes, there is a way out for everyone. It is the realisation that there is another way. It is the way of conscious dismantling of all weapons. It is the way that must arise from the people demanding it of their leaders. That is one reason all world leaders are presently so uninspired (because the push will come from the people). It is a way out, I do not say it will happen – but it is quite possible and would not be evident until it is done.

How to do it?

It will appear to be an almost spontaneous uprising and call for a halt to armaments. The seeds are there, let us see how the thing grows.

Will America take the lead?

It will be a spontaneous world-wide movement, no particular country being foremost.

What part will India play?

(India will be) included, of course. In each country it would take a different form but in all the basis would be the same.

That would be unique.

The Earth needs something unique. It is quite possible…and could spread like wild-fire.

How can it be started?

The realisation that it can be done. Realise it… Do not admit a single doubt of hesitation. Do not omit a single person from this realisation. Do not permit any lapses in your resolve that it can be done and will be done by the unnamed multitudes. It is quite possible.

‘That Vexatious Question of Abortion’

…And this brings me to another point. You bring up this burning question plaguing America right now: abortion and all that is connected to it. But I have to sound a warning here; and in fact that is the main purpose of this letter. I was rather alarmed at what you were reading into this issue, insofar as you sere seeing a ‘connection’ to my work behind it all, but in a way that seems misconstrued. If I have understood rightly from what you write, abortion somehow goes against my work. This is the only conclusion I can come to from your statement… ‘It is the war of the Womb being played out on a secular level… The battle is really about whether to give birth or to negate birth and the issue is the child. What could be more central to the work at the present stage?’

These dramatic pronouncements leave me bewildered! But I am not sure I understand the connection you are seeking to make, or the implications regarding my position on these issues. Why I hasten to clarify the matter is simply because you are now attempting to write something on me and my work. Therefore it is important that you form a clear idea about these connections, or else there is the risk that you will be reading into my work connections that are not there, or somehow missing the point or the ‘forest for the trees’.

I don’t see that this is the ‘war of the Womb’ at all (but I admit that I don’t really know what you mean by that). For me the issue is clear, and if there is any connection to the work I am doing it lies only in the fact that a shift is taking place and a ‘new purpose’ is being established as the new foundation for a new race. Central to this issue is the old purpose: procreation and atavism. That is, until now the pivotal function of the race has been to maintain its continuity in a field totally governed by the Ignorance and the Falsehood, and within that field to promote its evolution to a higher poise. In the binary system the sex centre was the dominant pivot, given the ‘old purpose’. What is happening to women the world over is simply a reaction to the Power which is seeking to introduce a new purpose and place that central, once and for all. The ‘right to give birth’ has absolutely nothing to do with this at all. Just the contrary. So, I am perplexed by your ‘discovery’. The right of women to give birth has been sacred and well protected from the beginning. No one disputes that. The issue at stake is simply a secular one: government funding for abortion. After all, no one is FORCING a woman to abort. It is simply a question of whether it is proper or not for a government to fund operations which a large segment of the population feels is abhorrent to and unmindful of their religious beliefs.

I am neither in favour of nor against abortion. To me it is simply a question of accommodations within the old structure. I am for changing that structure entirely. Then these issues will find their true place and solution. But, within the old structure, and living in a country with a bulging population and all the problems this gives rise to, I have to admit that when I hear Mother Theresa going around preaching against abortion at the behest of the Pope, I am rather disturbed. For the point is that to impede governments from funding abortions means that the poorer classes must bear the brunt. Government funding is required FOR THEM. Remember, it is all a question of money since no one can force anyone to have an abortion who does not want it. Thus, there is no question at all of ‘rights’ here, except the right to allocate funds or not for the purpose, and in the process to OBLIGE sectors of the population to fund projects which they are against religiously.

You would agree that some form of family planning is a must, especially in Third World countries. And that, given the ignorant condition of the human being, tied to the drives of his lesser functions, this condition has to be taken into consideration. That is, one cannot expect the populace to abstain, as Gandhi expected, totally unrealistically. One can provide women and men with means to avoid pregnancy; but we are dealing with very basic and simple drives and states of consciousness governed by rudimentary reasonings and compulsions. One has to take into account ‘accidents’ such as unwanted pregnancies, forced intercourse and the like. And these situations are prevalent in poorer sections of society. To withhold government funds for the purpose of providing safe abortions is criminal, in my view, and must cause great hardship to a certain sector of the population.

What has this got to do with ‘the right to give birth’, or in what way is it reflective of a ‘war of the Womb’, which you seem to feel reflects my work? You have to be very careful about reading things into issues, projecting your own feelings and conditionings or lacks into this work; moreso since you intend to present this work to the public in some form. Then the responsibility is even greater to be faithful to the truth to the best of your ability. By this I do not mean that you have to agree with me on everything. Not at all. I simply mean that when you write you must be sure that you are not attributing thoughts or actions or concepts or perceptions to me that are not mine.

All of these movements throughout the world are simply the way the old consciousness deals with the influx of the new Power. The responses are old, and within the old what else can we expect? They are accommodations, given the limitations of the field. That is why I insist that while one seeks to enlarge the perspective, at the same time there must be an effective means to enlarge the whole field of consciousness and being. Otherwise, it will be an action within a closed circuit that gets us nowhere ultimately. Or rather, that serves finally to destroy rather than create. A limited field can take only so much influx. If that field is not extended, those in-coming forces, no matter how ‘good’ they are, will hasten the collapse.

There is a certain rajasic leaping to conclusions. In your case this is heightened by Sun conjunct Uranus in Aries. Sometimes perceptions are astoundingly accurate, inspiring. But at other times they are ‘eccentric’ and clear cases of mis-seeings. That is why it is so important to do the yoga seriously, so that while Knowledge is being given there is a sensitised, stable receptacle that is receiving this Knowledge. Distortion is then minimised. One MUST work on oneself constantly, as you are doing. Otherwise the lens gets foggier and foggier, rather than a purer and more crystalline instrument of perception.

Feminism’s Conundrum

…When X first gave me the book you sent, The Chalice and the Blade, (by Riane Eisler, Harper & Row, 1988) and when I started reading it almost immediately, I wanted very much to write to you giving my impressions. Then, as I wrote, I got involved…and so it was impossible. I am still reading the book, and my impressions have not changed. In the first instance it looks as if it will be very instructive and perhaps illuminating. But then, as one reads on, it gets rather dull. This is, I believe, because the entire thesis hinges on a few facts or factors. In other words, she builds her thesis on just a few insights. How far can you go like that? But then, most academics do this, I am sure you have noted…

Yet, what she is saying – only that in times when the Goddess was worshipped the Earth was a peace-loving place; then, those Indo-European hordes descended from the north and brought with them worship of male deities, which cults fostered wars and aggression and suppression, by consequence, of the female deities. This is all fine, except that it is rather shallow and not at all enlightening as to the REASON why this invasion took place. She states it as a fact and that thereafter we were left with this deplorable situation.

But why? One can only find solutions to the type of problems she describes if one understands what lay at the root or behind the invasions and transference from female to male divinity worship. So far in the book (I am more than halfway through it) the author does not give any explanation. Just a fact. Therefore it is shallow and flawed. A further indication is that she has preferred to ignore the fact that there is a place on Earth where the Goddess is still worshipped – centrally, by almost the whole population. This is India. At no point in the book does she dwell on this fact. When she refers (briefly) to India in this context, it is always in citing the ancient scriptures; and even this is done only in passing and very superficially.

But you see, if the author were to admit that in India, in this modern age, worship of the Goddess thrives, her whole thesis might appear to be threatened. The claim that when the Goddess is worshipped there is no war, or very little, is a total fallacy. Indeed, we have even a Goddess of War in Durga, who herself wages battles and conquers by ‘the blade’. So, this is an example of intellectual dishonesty – ignoring certain facts in order to encourage the acceptance of one’s private theory.

At the same time, had she studied the Indian reality she would have found support for that theory – had she penetrated deeply into the matter. This comes from the fact that India has never been an aggressive culture or society. Even Hinduism is non-aggressive in the sense that there is no proselytizing, no seeking to impose one’s beliefs on others by various forms of violence, camouflaged or overt. Nor has India ever been a territorial aggressor. This would be an important point for her to make. However, she cannot because in doing so she would have to reshape much of her thesis. At the same time, it would encourage her to go more deeply into the matter: Why has the feminine deity been so thoroughly displaced in favour of a MONOTHEISTIC God. This is the most important point. Connected to this is idol worship. So far in the book I have not come across any explanation – deep and true – as to why, really speaking, idol worship was condemned in these new beliefs. I think that only in my work do you find the most complete explanation of this development. This is because only in my work does one find the question of Form dealt with. Consequently, there is Time as well. The two go hand in hand. And this brings in the question of the Multiplicity. And finally Movement. These are all issues which enter into the discussion. But nowhere in her book does she bring in these elements. Hence it becomes a shallow discussion. And sentimental. It appears to be just another women’s liberation manifesto, hardly a thorough and scientifically satisfying study. Yet this type of theorising is acclaimed by the intellectual greats of the day as ‘…A gem…a rare combination of poetic expression and sober substance’…‘The most stimulating, pathbreaking, important book I have read in many years – perhaps a key to our survival…An enormous achievement that may save us all’…‘A seminal work, destined to be debated and discussed for years to come…Required reading for anyone concerned about our destiny on earth’… And so on they go. It really makes me wonder about the condition of academia. When I picked up the book and read through these more than a dozen praises from the important intellectuals of the day – especially in the feminist movement – I really believed that I was entering a new experience and that this woman had really hit upon IT. Well, I am still searching in the book and hoping for the best.

Why I write ‘hoping for the best’ is because we WANT intellectuals and academics to have genuine breakthroughs in perception so that the new can really take root at all levels of society, especially with the intelligentsia. But lamentably we find that the nature of the academic pursuit is the very element which blocks deep and true perception. It obliges a superficial approach; and if one were to penetrate deeper this would have to be beyond the scope of academia. Then the shouting begins!

I am obliged to ask the author how she can treat this subject without dealing with Time and Movement and Form. First she must try to understand what or who the Goddess really is. What are the distinguishing features between the male and feminine deities. And this difference is not restricted to ‘peace-loving’ and ‘war-mongering’. This is a very shallow perception. There is much more to it. There is the question of the Immobile and the Mobile. There is the question of Permanence and the Impermanent. There is the question of Unity and Multiplicity. There is the question of Rest and Motion. If one penetrates these mysteries then one can begin to unravel the real Mystery at the heart of it all. But that requires really bold thinking and a reliance on an intuitive faculty which is unknown in academia. Not that by intuition I mean a hocus-pocus, illogical basis which is anathema to all serious study. I mean that initial INSIGHT which carries one beyond the appearance through to a DIRECT EXPERIENCE and PERCEPTION, via an identification of consciousness with the ‘essence’ of that element, that ‘goddess’. This is the only way to true understanding. People who write books such as this one have no DIRECT experience. They are in the mental realm, and while this can be very appealing and stimulating, it is never the REAL THING. It is always an external view, never a perception centred in the heart of the thing to be known, never a LIVED EXPERIENCE.

This is the basis of Yoga. It is to bring this sort of direct understanding via a ‘union’ (yoga) with the thing to be known. In India we know that Knowledge can only come in this way, never otherwise. Witness the yogas involving the Goddess of Knowledge, Saraswati, union with whom will bring that special perception and knowledge. Hence all my work has evolved from the yogic experience which brought direct contact and identification of the consciousness with the essence to be fathomed. Then one is carried into levels which can never be reached through the mental approach. In this New Way we go even further: a method such as the one which is followed in this work introduces a SPHERICAL perception. Understanding is holistic in the widest and deepest sense. Therefore I say that the author’s insight is shallow because it does not present us with the WHY of it all. I am not satisfied with the archaeological and historic discoveries, or the anthropological unravellings which prove that in such and such millennium the Goddess was worshipped and then that this worship was covered up (‘the great cover-up’) after the invaders from the north introduced their warring Gods and banished the Goddess. That tells me nothing. That is, it states a fact of history. Period. But this does not fulfil the claim of the author in the sub-title of her book to reveal our future course: ‘Our History, Our Future’. The reason is simple enough to explain: If she proposes that we must return to worship of the Goddess in order to save the Earth, then the next point is, How do we achieve this?

It is this point which I find most unsatisfyingly dealt with in all feminist literature and theories. In fact, it is not dealt with at all (I cannot take seriously the groups which have invented new rituals in praise of the feminine deity). You see, we cannot mentally affirm that the Goddess is the answer and then expect a major shift in the collective consciousness. It has to be a LIVED EXPERIENCE. Essentially this is the reason why I wrote The Tenth Day of Victory. It was to describe that LIVED EXPERIENCE. One may have all the ideas and theories and dogmas in the world, but they get us nowhere in the real condition of our individual and collective lives unless there is that ‘something’ that goes much deeper than the mental stratum. But let us be honest, can an academic ever allow him or herself to be carried through those ‘lived experiences’ such as I have described? Or which Sri Aurobindo has described? Clearly resistance would be formidable and absolute in most cases. Yet it is only via this sort of ‘yoga’ that one can acquire real understanding.

The answer does indeed lie with Woman. But what is that? In my understanding this has only very little to do with sex distinctions. True, women have a greater potential for the ‘lived experience’. But this is simply because her mental faculties, because of her ‘suppression’, have not been allowed to suffocate other parts of the being which are required for the total and lived experience I am referring to. And since we are dealing with ‘the truth of that which moves’, and that this is the essence of the feminine divinity or creative essence, then of course women are better predisposed to this lived experience of that Essence. But not always. And increasingly this capacity is being stifled as women seek to emulate men and rely on mental development, as the masculine mind has imposed it in academia for instance, to achieve the desired result. Finally, very little has been achieved of the Real Thing. Changes have been introduced on the social and political level (hardly sufficient yet), but this will not turn the world upside-down, so to speak. To revolutionise our life on Earth and to introduce the new way, we have to come to terms with Form, with that infamous bugaboo of mine: that despicable Void!; and hence with the Nothingness… And this means we have to tread upon very big toes! First of all we have to knock down a few sacred idols from very high pedestals. Gautam the Buddha is one. How many are willing to tackle such a ‘heavy weight’ as the Buddha? Name me just one – and where is the woman who understands what the problem is in such beliefs and even spiritual realisations? Significantly, many feminists follow these very paths which had signalled their own demise, in the distant past. Or in modern times there are the delirious followers of Rajneesh, now renamed more appropriately, Osho, in keeping with the solution he offers, which is the Void and the Nothingness. Are they aware of this? Certainly not. And not being aware, women end up by perpetuating those very beliefs and experiences which have carried us to the sorry state we find ourselves in.

Again we must ask WHY? If I criticise Riane Eisler for not telling us why evolution and destiny permitted those northern hordes to ‘stand reality on its head’ (to use her expression), then I do not want to be accused of the same sin. Thus, the problem at the root of it all is simply a penetrating understanding of the real purpose for this evolutionary play on Earth, and its mechanism. And this question of Integrality, of the development of a complete species in place of the species of half-light (both men and women) which describes our race. The central issue is that the mental principle does not represent the complete scale or potential for the individual. Yet having entered into an Age in which this question had to be dealt with, we were cast fully into the domain (and dominance) of Mind – (not male dominance) to work out that ‘knot’ in the species’ evolution of consciousness, to finally come to the higher reality which is an integration of all the parts of the being. This can only come to pass once that highest Principle is integrated into the evolutionary process. And this is done by successfully emerging from the present transitional phase.

Finally, women have to go beyond orthodox religions if they want to have that LIVED experience of the Goddess. How many are willing to do this? First of all, they must understand what religions signify, what makes them tick, so to speak. Thus one comes to understand that Religion is the child of the mental principle. In its essence and taken in isolation from the other cosmic principles – which is the nature of what we are experiencing in this transition: separation and division – Mind is a dualistic principle. Hence religions have divided humanity in the past and they continue to do so today, and they will continue to do so tomorrow. Thus to proclaim that the way to emerge from the impasse humanity is in is through something like an ‘interfaith dialogue’, for example, the latest brainchild of Dr. Karan Singh, is ridiculous. One attempts to use the tool of division for the process of healing. It is ludicrous. But the human being – or should I say, the human mind – is at the end of its tether. The paucity of inspiration we are faced with is pathetic. Karan Singh – another academic – goes to the extent of proclaiming that this ‘interfaith dialogue’ would be a way to realise the vision of such seers as Sri Aurobindo! Whom, by the way, he lumps together with Mohandas Gandhi! (I was tempted to write an article in response to his in ‘The Times of India’ refuting his claim, but what’s the point…).

Well, the answer lies in the LIVED EXPERIENCE of the Goddess. Let women have that experience, and men. Then we will truly know a new world. And finally, true understanding arises when one realises that those invading hordes of male-deity worshippers were themselves the Mother! This is the whole point.

10 June 1990

(From THEA’S JOURNAL, dated 17.6.1990, in continuation of the above):

…The feminist scholars demand the supremacy of ‘feminine’ values of peace, harmony, love, caring, and so on. The world must turn to the Woman if civilisation is to be redeemed. But I see how this is folly. I see the answer: control by the One. It is not dominance. This is my answer to violence: All serve the purpose of the One, negative or positive. The important thing is to unveil that One. This only Woman can do.

By this is meant that only woman can introduce the initial breakthrough. The formula that saves is 9/6/3/0-1. This is the way. But this formula is THE MOTHER. It defines HER.

In 1972 I ‘saw’ that. Everything was contained in the 9. He, She, We. We were all expressions of the formula which describes Her Being.

The Woman, the 3, has brought about the breakthrough. Now the world can know a truly non-violent way. But this is not a no-war, no-blood way. It may be and it may not be. How to contain those wild energies? Clearly women, the ‘weaker sex’, are not capable. So, what is the way? Moral restraints have failed. Violence has increased in spite of our rational and civilised culture. No, these barbarities will never be removed unless this control of the One is established.

It is only in this way that those energies are tamed. Not by eliminating them but through Harmony and Integration. Which means…‘Each thing in its place’.

This is the point to stress: each thing in its place. Only then can all the energies find their true expression. It is because nothing has been ‘in place’ that twists and knots have existed. These impeded control by the One. The latter can come about only when the full circle is unveiled. Before that treacherous ‘gaps’ drained away the energies; usurpation was the norm. Control can only arise when Harmony and Integration have been established.

Our births unveiled the full circle. We closed the gaps. This has been the saving grace. We closed the gaps. But once that was done something even more difficult remained. It was the Birth of the One. Then the ‘War God’ does his job. This means the transmutation of Mars.

The closing of the gaps, the unveiling of the full circle, for the first time, left the proper field for the Birth. Then ‘each thing’ could be put in ‘its place’. Not before. It was that ‘putting in place’ which happened in the 80s. In the 70s I consolidated the Circle. Then came the Birth, the unveiling. Then came the realisation of the One. So coherent, so exquisite…

Therefore that Fourth is BEING. He really does nothing, as he himself said at seven…‘Fare niente – andare, andare, andare nell’ infinito…’ We DO, he IS. We are the channels for his BEING.

And creation is the active principle to allow Being TO BE. It seems strange that Being should require any medium. But it is so. Otherwise it is unmanifest. But the unmanifestation cannot, rightly speaking, be BEING. For Being to be there must be the combined 0 and 9. In the Non-Manifest there is no Being.

This is how the idea of Nothingness came about. It was truly a partial seeing. Creation was then indeed a veil. One had to break through it in order to reach that Non-Manifest. Or Non-Being. It arose because creation was not known as the channel for BEING to BE. Asat or Sat, this is the question. It was rather a ‘disturbance’ creating problems only – insoluble problems.

Nothingness was the answer which excludes BEING. Being can only BE if the 0 and the 9 exist together. This means a material creation, a crystallised BODY of the Absolute. The Indians have known this. They still know it. For Being to BE, the Body must exist. This is the Mother. She allows him to manifest. Truly,…‘Without Him I exist not, without me He is unmanifest.’

This dual manifestation is imperative. This is the basis of that ‘partnership’ Riane Eisler goes on about. But unless one discovers the spiritual basis, the statements lack power. They are shallow. In other words, this ‘partnership’ of 9 (the Transcendent) and 6 (the Cosmic) is the basis of existence. And this should express itself all the way down the line.

What went wrong? The problem lay with the Three. Indeed, at my level; and in my period the Vital enters. Hence those violent, untamed energies. In other words, the problem lay with the Individual. The soul and its instrument. The problem lay in evolving an instrument capable of expressing THAT, that ‘partnership’. We are engaged on Earth in evolving an instrument capable of expressing the partnership of the 9 and the 6, or He and She. Expressing means giving form to this Truth in all our civilisation. In other words, we must indeed resolve this male/female conundrum – but it can only be done when we realise that the problem is not of male dominance. It is simply the instrument, the species. This means that when the (cosmic) waves come or the Consciousness-Force exerts itself, so to speak, the instruments that we are are unbalanced and therefore the male acts on these waves in his twisted manner, and the female too. Both are unbalanced. At one point the scale tips this way, at another it is the other way. It is incorrect to believe that in the past, in times of the Goddess worship, there was this Harmony and true ‘partnership’. It cannot have been – given the human instrument. It only means that the scale tipped in favour of the Feminine, but that was a sure sign of a tip the other way.

The scale. Libra. Yes, in The Magical Carousel’s symbolism I have described the situation: the pendulum swinging one way and the other until ‘the right balance is reached’. Entry into the sign/land is in an elevator/cage (recalling Gemini’s entry – Mind – in a similar ‘cage’). One rises high ‘above’ to reach this land. Indeed, the sophisticated and refined realms of Mind, for Libra is the first sign of the Mental Quarter. Then the elevator/cage begins to swing back and forth. It is the pendulum describing the ‘partnership’ of Riane Eisler’s theory. The beings one encounters in Libraland are perfectly balanced with one another – male and female. But it is an external complementation, outside oneself. Yet this precarious ‘balance’ can exist up there, in those ethereal realms of Mind. When one digs deep into Matter the pendulum is given violent jolts. History is written on this basis. In one Age it is the Feminine dominant: in the next the Masculine. Both male and female orbit a ‘void’, given the present stage of evolution; hence the swing one way or the other – and no true partnership can emerge. One must invariably dominate, and this dominance comes into being through a ‘caving in’ of energies (given the central ‘void’) in both female and male. Thus no ‘control’ via Harmony and Integration, and ‘each thing in its place’. For this something else is needed. Our present instrument cannot serve that ‘higher cause’ which Libra aspires to. We can rise to those realms above and serve (in Libraland) but we cannot bring it down here, on this planet Earth. Something else is needed.

The point is BALANCE, a new balance, via the New Way: a realignment of the very species itself which would permit the right intake of those energies. But first of all we must accept that we ARE receptors of these cosmic waves (the basic premise of astrology).

The point is simply to realign the instrument – through processes of consciousness – so that the true harmony of HE and SHE can manifest through the human race. Then there comes into being an instrument which can express an integrated harmony of the three energy flows: Rajas, Sattwa, and Tamas – creation, preservation, and dissolution. The individual must be the perfected instrument for that expression of the triadic play of cosmic forces. Denying the truth or reality of that Play, denying thus the essence of the manifestation, is to deny the Mother.

On the Future of India

(A letter from PNB to a New Delhi correspondent, dated 15 December 1977.)

We have often made reference in our exchange of letters to the future of India. It has always been vague and on my part I have never had the opportunity to go deeply into the matter. Perhaps it can really only be done if and when we meet again, since at present there are certain things that would have to enter into such a discussion which can only be done justice to in person. However, after writing 400 pages recently on this vague quantity called ‘the future of India’, I have come to the conclusion that this is the real problem for the present: nobody knows what is really going on because no one has what might be called a clairvoyant vision that can pierce through the outer happenings of the moment. Everyone is caught in the chaos of the moment, and in that confusion the light is not to be perceived. Yet the confusion of the moment is a part of the whole. In fact, it is the result of developments of the last hundred years, so we have to see the chaos in its rightful light also if we wish to perceive what lies beyond. And we can only understand the chaos if we see beyond it! What I mean to say is, vision must be total or we shall never pull ourselves out of the mess….

And mess we are in. The forces of stagnation and death have never been so powerful. But this is precisely because their hold has never before been threatened to the extent to which it has been of late.

The problems of India cannot be solved by man. It is only by the Divine Mother’s grace that this country will be able to rise up one day. However, Grace is not an abstract factor. There is an almost mathematical quality about this thing we call ‘grace’. We become channels of it when we have harmonised our individual or collective beings with the higher will from where the new energy issues forth, the energy that can accomplish with ease what man on his own strength and resources can never hope to achieve. It is by attunement with such a will that the life of this nation will be restored and the new India will unveil itself. The keynote in the process is Harmony. There are certain laws of higher harmony let us call them, which govern the process and determine the future course we shall take.

I mentioned that I was very much concerned lately about the condition of women. This is precisely because the being of a woman is especially prepared to serve as an instrument for the process of harmonisation I speak of. In fact, she embodies this principle; therefore in denying woman one denies the very possibility of ever making a cosmos out of this reigning chaos. As the Cosmos is the embodied greater feminine principle of Harmony, so too the womanhood in a society’s structure is the collective embodiment of the same principle. In India, as in most of the world, there is an effort made to subdue and to suppress this portion of the community, and by so doing the outer life becomes every day more and more disharmonious, more violent, more harsh, more angular and brittle.

This may seem irrelevant and not at all connected with the political, economic and social problems of the nation – but in fact here lies the core of the matter. The person under greatest attack at present (Indira Gandhi) is actually fighting this battle, and there is a consolidated effort to overcome her, not because of any of the reasons which fill our newspapers, but because of this battle of subtle forces which simply makes use of the existing set-up in order to attempt to submerge the world once and for all and to completely abort the birth of a new Earth.

In all of this there is in fact nothing hidden. It is all very plain – exactly what is, is. Only it is not convenient to look at what is. It is uncomfortable, because to see clearly is the first step on the way to change.

I believe she is having difficulties for several reasons. One is that she is really unaware of the real struggle, who she is, what she represents. Or if she is aware she is afraid to stand up clearly for these things and let all the masks fall.

Secondly, I believe she has been open to forces which have clouded the process and hindered the development along the lines of harmony and ease. I could be very specific about this.

The times are immensely important. Great questions, of a universal nature, are being worked out. But one cannot extricate oneself from the mess unless there is an absolutely clear vision that sees with exactitude the nature of the force that must be conquered. Only such a clear seeing can open the way. And one must know exactly the role all the elements involved play.

And above all one must be completely surrendered to the real Power that does everything. There must be no feeling of a personal capacity to do, of personal power, or any such thing. By this I do not mean the conventional concept of humility and false modesty, or the moralist’s definition of one who thirsts for power. Usually those who point their fingers at others in this regard are the real ones who hunger after power. Such people have a fear of greatness and they see in it a threat and confuse it with what it is not. The surrender of which I write is a state of being. It does not come in a day. It means being rid of ego, or at least making the ego sheath as transparent as possible. The easiest way to reach this state is in the act of complete self-giving, which is Love.

In this same light…those who boast most of God realisation and spiritual attainments are often the ones who are farthest from the light. But the Hindu tradition has seen through this mask from time immemorial, for the Asura is invariably depicted in the ancient lore as one of high attainments, who had subjected himself to the most rigorous tapasyas, because of which he was granted the coveted boon. The realisations of those powers were often more outstanding than those of the Gods! So, another reason for the need to see clearly…

I have very much to say, but truly I do not know where to begin. I have to know where the interest lies, in which direction the energies are tending – then I can say more and be more specific. The question is to see the goal clearly. It is the only way.

One final thing. Destiny is a strange and mysterious thing. When one is the centre of the nation by destiny, by the alchemy of divine laws, it does not matter where one is or what position one holds; one does not forfeit that destiny and cease to be the pivot of the nation. Actually this is the most unhappy condition for a nation: when it refuses to recognise its destined leaders. This means that instead of the country progressing harmoniously in accord with the higher laws, the movement proceeds along the negative. That is, the pivot is always there, around which all is played out, but instead of working along positive lines the destiny of the nation is worked out negatively. This condition has been in existence since the early 1920s – gaining momentum year by year, until now, in the name of a rejection of ‘dynastic rule’ those who by destiny are to play these roles are sought to be eliminated. In favour of what? Lord only knows… What this boils down to is simply that the Laws cannot be changed but the process can be perverted. And then the whole nation suffers and a time of senseless undoing ensues. All the energies are channeled into a negative process of undoing. Whereas when the right pattern is seen and set in motion, the energies are allowed a positive expression leading to rapid growth and rise.

But for this the destined ones have to be aware, have to see clearly and be open to the true thing – and above all they have to be ever in a state of joyous surrender.

There is something to know about the destiny of this person (Indira Gandhi); it can explain many of her actions – of which perhaps she herself is unconscious. She is compelled to behave in a certain way by the power of her destiny, a dharma which cannot be understood unless it is seen in the context of the whole; that is, unless she is seen as a member of a ‘line’, as I call it. Only when the existence of this Line is known can any sense be made out of this country’s past and present woes. The one who came before her in the Line (Jawaharlal Nehru) was a prisoner, until the end, of a structure that he himself contributed to making, and which by destiny he was not allowed to undo. This was not his dharma. To her, on the contrary, falls the task of undoing and rebuilding. That is, she is supposed to break down the structure that he left in order to make room for the new. It should be a process of dissolution which leads to a new birth. But the birth comes only if while she breaks at the same time she must be engaged in a tremendous act of creation. It is for this reason that the third in such a Line, as she is, must be a woman.

Therefore you see that the whole of her public life seems to be one of splitting up, breaking down, dividing. But this is only the appearance. Behind the scenes, acting on the command of a Power which she ignores, she is involved in a most noble task, an immensely difficult one, because the dharma of the Third is the most resisted of all. The powers of decadence and of the old recognise instinctively that she is the real threat to their existence. The one before her was not because, as stated, he was too much involved in the structure. In a sense he built it. Therefore he was no real threat. But with her it is an entirely different matter. She is compelled to dissolve and make new. The important fact to bear in mind, however, is that unless she is actively and potently involved in the process of creation at the same time, her actions will not be those that dissolve in order to give rise to a new life, but simply those of destruction.

This is the situation at present. The energies are being smothered, turning back upon themselves, getting poisonous – because there is no positive outlet. This will destroy her, and in her destruction the channel through which energies are fed to the nation from higher planes is closed. The country then becomes consumed in a process of chaotic disintegration. It is overtaken by the powers of the past and its new future is annihilated.

                                    Whither the World?

…Some questions in your 17.3.1990 letter oblige me to answer in some detail since I can see that there are misconceptions about what I have written regarding the Eastern Europe changes… If I don’t spell things out in one go in VISHAAL, it is for a very good reason. Foremost is the fact that I am ‘preparing the soil’. Until one has laid certain foundations for a discussion, it is useless to proceed further. And this is an action rather than an intellectual concept. Along with what is finally written there is an ‘active principle’. So, this demands a certain type of communication which draws its own boundaries. But very often you jump the gun…

In conjunction with the above there is of course the fact that a very fine line divides this attitude from genuine curiosity or a real thirst for truth and to know. So, this is perhaps why I have never wanted to deal with the matter. One risks stifling healthy questioning. But there are dangers. These are that shadings may be thrown onto thoughts which gradually, if allowed to go unchecked, will carry us far from the original thought. This happens all the time. It is the same violence which is done in relationships, in interaction with other people…not allowing the truth of the other to manifest but closing it out by our own preconceptions.

But let me return to your original questions about Europe and particularly Germany, with respect to the globe in the Chamber. You ask, Does Germany hold the key for the unification of Europe?

This is not the case. It is something else. In the last VISHAAL (4/6, February 1990), I purposefully ended my article with Sri Aurobindo’s words on the new order being based on two things: FREEDOM and UNITY. But I realise these are cold concepts for people. They cannot translate them into action or what is transpiring on Earth. They cannot see that these two elements alone stand behind what is taking place in Europe.

…Leftists the world over are having a very hard time with the collapse of socialism. And of course there are the capitalists who are rejoicing over the collapse and sneering well and hard. But they are uncomfortable with what is happening – they know it is a lie.

Where does the truth reside? X writes. ‘Nations do not die. It is the systems that perish.’ Quite true. Nations live on, – but do they fulfil their purpose? He complains about America. He has been predicting the fall of America ever since I first met him – that is at least 13 years ago. But now America seems to be on top, and this is most annoying to a futurologist who has been carrying on about the collapse of the West and the rise and establishing of the East. At least part of the East has collapsed; and India appears to be headed for a complete break up. So, I am wondering what he is making of all this… He writes of pessimism in his letter, and he knows that I am the only true and consistent optimist. But my optimism is not based on surface happenings. As much as X would like to penetrate deeper and ‘know’, he cannot. Like others, he hasn’t a clue as to what is really transpiring.

No, it is not that the American system is better and that is why it has survived, while communism is bad and collapsed under the weight of its own ‘evil empire’. America lives on simply because she is being more faithful to her dharma and, as Sri Aurobindo prophecied of the new world order, she has borne a consistent respect for those precious ingredients: FREEDOM and UNITY. As a nation made up of 50-odd states, America is an example to the world in unity. India, for one, cannot seem to emulate the American success story of unity. Try as she may. But this is simply because America shook off the yoke of imperial-colonial rule before it had become the monster that it did right after America won her independence. India, on the other hand, remained saddled with certain devastating ‘gifts’ of the British. Foremost is its administrative and political system. The bureaucracy in India was so superbly devised that it is an organic, self-perpetuating system which can never be transformed. It bears in its being every element required for its conservation and perpetuation. On this basis, without taking into consideration anything else, India cannot ‘get her act together’. Why this is so is another story. More on that later.

Z claimed that America ‘has no vision’. This is also true – but is she meant to have a vision? I have always sustained that it is India who must give the new Vision to the world. So, we must go step by step in this process. Each nation must be faithful to its own dharma. America has been, in spite of everything. Perhaps because she is so mechanical in her response to impulses and forces. She swiftly carries out the processes, like her innumerable fads. But as in all adolescence, America has had to pay the price for her FREEDOM, that other precious ingredient. She holds that as a sacred right and regardless of what American leftists may say (I quote Z…’30,000,000 people are not “free” in the USA because they have no access to health care…’), this concept is alive and well. It is so much alive that the drug scourge and AIDS are just some of the signs that the American dharmic contribution of freedom is active. Passage through adolescence teaches us that we must take responsibility for our actions. It is very typical of youth, and especially the youth of today after the hippy culture, to deny responsibility. So, if you want free sex, freedom from censorship, pornography and all manner of intellectual pollutants, then it is clear that these do take their toll. At the same time, to curb these expressions threatens that dharmic expression: freedom. It is a serious and understandable bind.

What this indicates is one plain and simple fact: No nation, given the actual ‘boundaries’ of the human species, can hope to express its true soul and dharmic essence. Everything we see, whatever is taking place today, or has taken place until today, is simply a series of perversions of that soul-essence. But the character of the perversion is what throws light on the true essence of each nation and what its contribution is meant to be in the extended System. Thus, to express the true dharma we need the proper field. This field is Whole Time. This pertains to individuals as well as nations: Whole Time. Or else, the full circle, as expressed in the Gnostic Circle. In other words, right at the point in the Circle (Capricorn) which indicates the coming to terms with one’s dharma or destiny, we exit the wheel! We spin off to nirvana or heaven, or whatnot. So, as a race we have never known what this Whole Time is and what it might bring to our lived experience on this planet. Indeed, we have never known what the very destiny of the planet is, since that Capricorn passage is the movement into that ‘chamber closed and mute’ where the destiny of the earth itself is written. Significantly, in Savitri Sri Aurobindo makes it clear that entry into that ‘chamber’ is reserved for very, very few.

To return to America, it is not that her ‘system’ has triumphed – free market, capitalism, consumerism, or whatnot. But in a way these have triumphed. Indirectly. The whole point is – FREEDOM. Communism collapsed simply because it had stifled that indomitable right of the human being. No new order can come about without this basic ingredient. Had there been freedom, even of the simplest kind in the Eastern Bloc, we would not have witnessed this total collapse of a system. It would have remade itself somehow, as America is able to remake herself, if her people so wish.

This is all an immensely interesting process to study because it is so clear in its present operation. What we are dealing with is the Third Principle: the Individual (Divine). It is that Cosmic Principle that contains this question of Freedom. America was born on this ‘note’. This is her soul-essence and in some way she must make this manifest, add this to the Earth’s symphony of nations. But, at the same time, given the limitations of our ‘field’ – both collective and individual – America can only present a perversion of that Principle. The same holds for India, the ‘new’ India born in 1947 when she liberated herself from colonial rule. But India is not at all ‘free’. I repeat, she is saddled not only with her glorious past but with the more recent ‘glories’ of the British Raj. So, these two sister nations, as I would call them, are burdened in a similar way – though this would not be apparent in a surface assessment. None can appreciate that America and India are grappling with the same thing: the perversion of freedom, or the Third Principle; and that both enjoy this same ‘note’ of destiny.

At the same time, there is a difference: one is poised peripherally, the other centrally. Thus, as I have written so often in the past, when these positions are reconciled and work in harmony, we shall see something of the truly new order manifesting. America may not have a vision at this point; but if she clings to these basic principles, as best she can, she will come through this great transition and come out of it into her own true light. India may indeed have the potential for the Vision, but this is not a CONSCIOUS element. This fact alone is what creates such a colossal confusion. The new times call for CONSCIOUS PARTICIPATION, especially when centrally poised, as India is. So you can gather from this that India will continue bumbling along until she stumbles into that light and embraces it with a clear perception of what exactly it is. This has not happened except sporadically, which has not been sufficient to solve the problems and eliminate the obstacles on the path to the fulfilment of her destiny. Hence, the perversion…

It is the perversion of the Third Principle which has permitted India to become victim of an apparently irredeemable egotism. This manifests in the Corruption Syndrome, which is no longer a hidden game but an overt ‘system’. I cannot go into the details of this degeneration, but I will simply leave you with these hints. You can work out the details for yourself. You will see, if you carry the process of analysis through to its completion, that corruption is simply the Third Principle gone wild. At the same time, similar to America where AIDS and drugs are the obvious results of the perversion of its dharmic contribution of freedom, as it would be interpreted within the limits of our mental reasoning capacities, India suffers equally from a perversion of something that lies in the bosom of the Third Principle: spontaneity, flexibility, plasticity. These are all appendages of Freedom, that much is clear. But they are essential to India’s true soul expression. The fact that these characteristics do exist and permit the most unbelievable situations to arise in India, is what allows us to state that India too, like America, is expressing her soul-essence even though perverted. The perversion itself indicates the real and ultimate contribution.

There is one clear lesson to be learned from the 45 years since the end of the War. The economies which are really thriving are the German and the Japanese. It is not that these countries have a better system, or even that they are more industrious people (though this they are). What is clear is that they were impeded from putting precious resources into armaments. The two superpowers are cracking under the weight of their armament budgets. The Russian economy collapsed almost completely, while the USA’s manages to carry on simply because its system allows for replenishment more easily than the Russian. But the point is, if America would eliminate this drain, there is no economy in the world that would be able to compete with her, embodying as she does the essence of Matter.

So, the losers of the War have come out the winners. It is an irony of fate, but it teaches us that there are no morals in all this: the aggressors, though vanquished, end up by being the victors in an even more interesting manner. The restrictions imposed upon them have only served to make them formidable economic powers. We see also from this that indeed, as I have often written, in large part the future of humanity hinges on economic issues, this being a central aspect of the Third Principle, the Vital.

As far as Germany holding the key to the unification of Europe, this is not true, or perhaps only partially true. In fact, Germany may present an insurmountable impediment to unity. There are issues still to be worked out, in the deeper strata, not on the political, social or economic levels. These will sort themselves out once the deeper issues have been successfully dealt with. You see, this question of Unity is a complex issue. It involves a true, a lasting change of consciousness and a completely new perception and perspective. We are presently in the very early stages of this shift. The loudest voice throughout the world is the nationalist’s still. Real unity can only come into being once, at least in a nuclear experiment, a consciousness evolves which has gone beyond these limitations. I have written about this in The New Way, Volume 1. First there is the cry of nationalism – them comes unity. But the former has its place and purpose in the scheme of things. All of this is being worked out in this new ennead.

There is another matter. People confuse things. For example, because they speak different languages or wear different costumes or have certain distinguishing aspects of their culture, they may believe that these confer the right to claim independence from the larger nations of which they are a part. But this is not always true. A ‘nation’ is not determined by these elements alone. There is much more involved. India, for example, is a nation whose essence is characterised precisely by these remarkable differences which make her worthy of the national motto, Unity in Diversity. Therefore, when parts of this nation seek to break away which do indeed belong to the entity called Mother India, we know then that a force of negation is at work, seeking to impede the process of unification and the experience of true unity. Presently the greatest obstacle in this process is religion. In the name of religion many perverted attitudes are being displayed. A very great ignorance reigns. It is this Ignorance which must be conquered.

So this question of Unity is a vast one, because when one speaks of unity automatically multiplicity is implied. These are the irreconcilable opposites which Supermind reconciles. And we return therefore to the key words of our times: Harmony and Integrality. The realisation of these two cosmic principles, in the YOGIC sense, is what will draw India (and by consequence the rest of the world) back from the brink of the abyss upon which she now stands.

On ‘Other Possibilities’

(Extracts of a letter from Patrizia Norelli to the former prime minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, written from North America on 29.6.1981.)

…I wish also to mention that I have encountered a colossal collective formation of the coming great destruction during this trip. Before people used to ask me IF there would be one; now they ask WHEN. It is an accepted fact. But I have seen something in all this that strikes me deeply: there is the idea, particularly predominant in so-called spiritual groups, that a destruction is necessary and that after that, by some as yet unknown mechanism, the new world will arise. That is, destruction will clear the way to allow for this birth. However, this is a very wrong thinking, because the two have nothing to do with each other. The new already is born and is growing; it does not need any destruction. Destruction is simply the choice of the old Earth, the old consciousness which understands that it is tied up in knots it does not know how to undo. It sees no way out, no solution to these ties that are becoming each day more and more tight to the point of strangulation. So, in despair it chooses destruction. This is simply the choice of the old consciousness. It is not a necessity, particularly not a necessity for the new way. Destruction will change nothing for the new Earth; the two things are not related. Moreover, I am seeing other possibilities for the solution to all this.

I have also taken the ‘pulse’ of the two continents: Europe and America. The former is like a terminally ill patient; it lives in the tragedy of its doomed condition, burdened with its formidable yet dying past, with no re-vitalising force. Its heavy weight is its doom. The Americans, on the other hand, still have the force of infancy and adolescence and are unburdened by mighty pasts. They have the re-vitalising strength that can make new what their ignorance may destroy. To believe that this continent is doomed may be an illusion. The problem lies elsewhere, in a control of its tremendous yet untamed power. India, I still believe, must open the way…but the key word of the Americas is positivism.

A New World is Born

The events transpiring in Europe merit a separate article, though the subject has been treated indirectly in VISHAAL from its inception in 1985, insofar as they bear a direct relation to the Yoga of the Chamber which I have been describing in various contexts during this period. Indeed, the very existence of this newsletter is entirely due to the successful developments in that revolutionary and new yogic process.

1984 was the reversal-point in the Yoga of the Chamber, but not at all confined to the realisation of one individual or a group. It was a turning point for the whole Earth, with ripples being felt on the increase from that time across the globe. Certain places responded more vibrantly and quickly to this breakthrough; but only because Time had already ripened conditions in those areas, being more responsive to its power for various reasons.

But what exactly happened at that time to make it possible to affirm that the successful outcome of the Yoga of the Chamber had a significant impact on world affairs and the far-reaching changes we are presently witnessing, hitherto thought to be unattainable? For the most salient feature of the events of 1989 is the unexpected changes the Eastern European countries experienced and the relative ease and, above all, the swiftness of the events. Similarly, contrary to the usual turn in such situations, there was very little violence. If we consider the nature of the ‘iron curtain’ which disintegrated to permit this transformation, we are indeed justified in marvelling at the ease with which such formidable structures were dismantled in a matter of days.

A Seer’s ‘dream’

Ancient traditions sustain that behind historic movements of significance stands the yogic realisation of an embodied sage, saint, avatar, either mingling with the people as the Ramayan and Mahabharat describe regarding the lives of the Evolutionary Avatars, Sri Ram and Sri Krishna; or else traditions that hold that there are superior Beings hidden away in the Himalayas or similar far-away retreats who act from a distance on world affairs. Then again there are the claims of disembodied beings, as well as those residing in other galaxies. One ‘brotherhood’ goes so far as to claim that at the centre of the Earth there is a community of superior souls who await the proper conditions before ‘appearing’ and taking over the management of world affairs. This Earth-centre based outfit (!) is held responsible by this group for the course of evolution on the planet, and these august Beings are expected to emerge from their hiding place in the bowels of the Earth and govern the world in the Golden Age which their spiritual efforts are preparing.

Clearly we have no way of verifying any of these claims. Most, if not all, are the fruit of excessive zeal and devotional delirium. I find it therefore understandable that the more pragmatic among us dismiss these stories as aberrations induced in minds warped by excessive mystical indulgence. And, in a sense, I tend to agree.

However, this does not mean that I do not accept the basic premise – which is the impact a yogic breakthrough of a very specific order can and does have on world events. But my point is another: when such actions do occur it must be possible to draw clear and unmistakable connections between the happenings and the process, i.e., the mechanism responsible for the developments on the world stage, and the events themselves as they unfold. There must be a clear, quasi mathematical correlation, a factual connection. To make these connections, however, we are obliged to accept the parameters the yogic process itself lays down. We cannot apply to it the norms and forms of disciplines which have no relation to the yogic methodology, scope and aim; and, more specifically, which lack any ability to operate in the more subtle dimensions where the REAL causes are set in motion for what may later transpire on Earth. By this I do not mean an activity in exclusively occult dimensions or in any sense removed from our physical field. I mean, rather, an action hitherto undiscovered, a power which operates through channels, agents, processes that the human being, however steeped in scientific lore he or she may be, ignores entirely.

Yoga in India (and I refer to the vast gamut inclusive of and beyond hatha yoga, which is normally the only discipline the West knows of the Indian yogic genius) is an extremely precise affair. The numerous shastras which form the recorded guidelines of these systems attest to the exactness which the realisers of these different schools of self-perfection were compelled to respect. Similarly, if today we state that the Yoga of the Chamber has played its part in events the world over, it must be possible to explain the connection adequately enough to exempt us from the label of mystic dreamers. This becomes especially important in our present new Age of the Supermind, whose very character fosters a far more mathematical approach in the yogic effort and its accompanying body of knowledge.

Indeed, all systems of Yoga in India have their respective framework of higher knowledge, based on the direct experience, to guide the seeker along those numerous paths. Likewise, the New Way has its framework. More than just a written codus, we have a physical symbol/structure – the inner Chamber of the Mother’s Temple. In particular, the CORE of that structure is the guiding key, being as the Mother prophesied, ‘the symbol of the future realisation’.

This statement was made by her in 1970. From that very year onward – and more specifically from 1971 – the lived yogic process substantiated her claim regarding that magical piece of sacred geometry and architecture, which her own yoga of the years following upon Sri Aurobindo’s passing in 1950 had permitted her ‘to see’.

The ennead 1971-1980, as I have stated elsewhere in VISHAAL, saw the descent of this corpus of an entirely new and truly SYNTHETIC Knowledge, brought about exclusively through yogic experiential methods in precise stages measurable by the yardstick those experiences themselves produced: the Gnostic Circle. Simultaneously, the yardstick permitted the veils to be drawn aside disclosing the true meaning and power of the Mother’s vision. The ennead of 1971-1980 provided us with the invincible foundation of a truth-conscious Gnosis which is the sole basis for the new world order to evolve successfully.

When we crossed the threshold of the ennead’s time portal and moved into the next, 1980-1989, this superior foundation which the supramental yoga had cemented in our experience was the upholding support of the process which came to be known as the Yoga of the Chamber. Its goal was to ‘construct’ that Chamber. Being the ‘symbol of the future realisation’, and the ‘symbol being the thing symbolised’ in our work, it was predictable that the Temple of the Mother’s original vision had to play an immediate and unmistakeable role in the process. Not simply as a ‘symbol’ up there, somewhere, in some occult and removed region or representative category, but right here and within an easily monitored time span. Indeed, that process, if it was to be true to the foundation already laid in the 1970s and recorded in my various books and in VISHAAL, had to make the connections with the planes the Knowledge described. The Yoga of the Chamber was therefore the means to construct the bridge between the physical and the supramental planes. And, we may rejoice, this has been done.

The Mother has discussed an aspect of the problem involved in establishing a connecting bridge of this order. She referred to it as an eternal truth in a timeless poise brought into time. The supramental Truth IS, eternally. Its existence lies beyond our time-measure. However, we live in a world which is time-bound by the very fact that we are embodied. Thus, the ‘process’ which the Mother alludes to is that all-important act of transporting that eternal truth into this material universe and our evolutionary framework. The ‘bridge’ connecting the two requires a very special action to bring it into being so that its purest essence may become rooted in our evolving world…

‘The truth I bring will manifest itself and will be embodied upon earth; for, it is the earth’s and the world’s inevitable destiny. The question of time is not relevant. In one respect the truth which I say will be made manifest, is already realised and established: there is no question of time there. It is in a consciousness timeless and eternally present. There is a process, a play of translation between that timeless poise and the poise in time that we know here below…’.

The process of ‘translation’ or the ‘bridge’ connecting these planes is the important point, the keys of which the Mother herself left us in the plan of the inner Chamber.

To substantiate our claims and the Knowledge put forth, by remarkable interconnections and patterns we are able to see the formulas of the Yoga take viable directive shape in the world. To render this statement non-speculative and thus to escape the labels earlier decried, I shall describe the key element involved in this process and how it has been connected to world affairs in this past decade. In addition, to make the following even clearer and less speculative, I shall reproduce portions of Volume 3 of The New Way, written in November of 1983, just when this yogic breakthrough was taking place that led to the Great Reversal of 1984 and the turn of events at the close of the ennead which are the direct outcome of that Reversal. In doing so two purposes will be served: one is to provide a description from firsthand and immediate experience of the nature of that Power that we see operating openly in the world; and second, I wish to reveal something of the new character of a yogic process based on the Supramental Truth in which knowledge and power are virtually simultaneous manifestations. The text from Volume 3 is able to explain an aspect of the happenings in Eastern Europe which is the most baffling part of the events. This is the swiftness and ease with which the transformation of that political scenario took place – as well as its meticulous faithfulness to the commands of Gnostic Time. One is continuously reading or hearing about the world’s amazement at such developments hitherto believed to be impossible. Indeed, the very terms and symbols involved in the transformation seemed to contradict any such ease and swiftness; namely, the iron curtain, the steel and concrete wall, and so forth. These are indeed solid, formidable, frightening symbols of a closed, blocked consciousness. The political bloc that took refuge behind this ironclad protective wall and which has come to pieces before our amazed eyes, appeared to us as partaking of that sort of hardness and impenetrability, and none could conceive of a breakthrough in such a closed fortress of the order we have just witnessed. Symbol (wall, curtain, etc.) was indeed totally equal to the very consciousness symbolised.

However, in writing Volume 3 in 1983, and during the very month of the breakthroughs which would occur six years later in 1989, I gave out rather exact details of the new process, made possible through the Yoga of the Chamber and in particular the success attained by end 1983. The most difficult and dangerous portion of the Yoga in terms of the individual effort was in 1983. What was achieved then and described in that volume was the creation of a ‘centre’, as I have often discussed in VISHAAL. It was the realisation, or rather the integration of the Fourth Power operating in the cosmos and on Earth, the Son Principle, or that act of PERFECT CENTERING which is ‘the birth that fills the void’. Together with that came the new alignment and in 1984 this constituted the element by which at the time of the Great Reversal the world would not experience chaotic collapse (into the prior ‘void’) which certain formidable pressures might induce or instigate but would be carried along in a minutely CONTROLLED process of transformation based on the existence of a new Power in the alchemy of contending forces. The nature of that Power and how it came into operation, collectively and individually, is described fully in Volume 3.

The Centre ‘Holds’

But what exactly is meant by the statement, the creation of a centre?

It means a NEW ALIGNMENT has come into being, eliminating the supremacy of a binary structure as the matrix of the species. Once this is effectively accomplished we find ourselves on the road to immortality. That is, we have conquered Death.

Indeed, this was the precise nature of what transpired in the course of 1983 to bring the Centre into being and to ‘fill the void’. During that year I withstood the pressures – constant and relentless until the work was done – to exit. I lived the most intense contraction of the embodied consciousness, inward upon itself until it became nothing but a speck of light, a lonesome and entirely solitary POINT and absolutely nothing more.

In other words, as a species we incarnate or enter this material universe of 9 by a similar but reverse process. We are pressed into this dimension, this universe. However, when that ‘point’ that we are is pushed into and through the mental, vital and physical layers of our world, it gathers about itself the elements for its manifestation and existence on Earth. Finally physical birth takes place in a body entirely dependent upon and held together by a ‘poise’ which corresponds to the present stage of evolution of the species. That is, since we are at an incomplete stage, with Mind as the highest governing and determining principle, in its turn having usurped the position of Supermind or the Truth-Consciousness, this incompletion results in an imbalance and we evolve physical structures for our sojourn on the planet in accordance with this state of affairs. That is, we are held together in the physical by an off-centre axis, the direct result of this incompletion. Consequently we orbit a void WHERE THE TRUE CENTRE SHOULD BE. And when Time presses inward, when Time exerts its contracting power at a certain stage in our growth and evolution – individually as well as collectively, as a civilisation – this contraction indeed presses the consciousness inward and upon itself, for it has nowhere else to go. The result is collapse into the Void. The result is Death.

The physical cannot withstand this contraction and sustain continued embodiment and evolution on Earth. We are literally driven out of Earth’s time. Our time comes to an end as a conscious and connected and lived experience on Earth. We are neatly thrust into this void which we orbit, shoved over the brink and into the abyss. The result is the slumber of death, the sleep that veils our previous experience on Earth and obliges us to re-enter in the future shorn of any knowledge of who we are and what our origin is, what we were or even where we are headed.

To be conscious is the aim of the supramental evolution – conscious on all levels of the being, each layer ‘opened’ and ‘integrated’ into the whole. To secure this state and a continued evolution having conquered Death – which means that we never fall into this death-sleep – we must remain conscious through the entire passage and re-entry takes place in a lucid state which SPEEDS UP the process of evolution and makes each and every experience on Earth something entirely luminous.

But this can only come about when there is no longer a void central to the consciousness-being. Implying an OFF-CENTRE AXIS. Hence the need to bring into being the true centre, the need to FILL THE VOID. To achieve this one had to live the contraction to a point CONSCIOUSLY, which normally produces death in the human being, misaligned as the species actually is. One returns to one’s original condition under the pressure of that intense contraction. One returns to one’s POINT STATUS, for there is no other choice once our time has ‘run out’ (like an unwinding clock) and we can only exit the same way we had entered. The reason is that there is nothing to withstand the pressure. There is no SUPPORT given to this ‘point’, this speck of light…or this ‘globe’ that is one’s soul.

In the Mother’s original plan of the Inner Chamber, the Core which she called ‘the symbol of the future realisation’ shows the soul (globe) supported (by the pedestal) and incapable of experiencing any collapse. That Core describes the state of Immortality. Are we surprised then to learn that the Knowledge connects the Pedestal supporting the Globe to 26 November, or Immortality Day? Are we surprised to learn that the Pedestal is the representation of the Son Principle whose birth as the returned Sri Aurobindo took place on that very day, November 26? Are we surprised to learn that the Globe can be ‘supported’ only by a pedestal whose perfect positioning and measurements permit it to be the binding energy of a true new Centre?

Again, are we surprised to learn that in the temple being erected in Auroville the globe they are installing this year does not rest on this perfect alignment and support and that the measurements of the pedestal they have devised is, as everything else in that building, distorted?

This distortion is the reason for all our woes, as individuals, as nations, as a civilisation, as a species: off-centre axis and misalignment create wrong perceptions and destruction and ultimately death. The distortions in the Auroville temple describe with uncanny, unfortunate accuracy the condition of our world of Ignorance. Every modification the builders have introduced in the Mother’s original plan, such as the void in the centre of the room, are faithful descriptions of the state of consciousness of a species of half-light.

For this reason, to counteract the impact of that obstinate rejection of the supramental Light, it was necessary to perform the Yoga of the Chamber. It was imperative to bring into being that true Centre so that in the course of earth-shattering events, those of the recent past as well as those to come, the planet would be saved, there would be no collapse but a miraculous ‘support’ so that civilisation could begin to make the transition demanded of it from 1984 onward, held intact in certain crucial passages and levels to prevent a total destruction. Thus has the process of TRANSFORMATION been introduced in contrast to the old method of constant tearing down, destroying and ultimately collapse into the void.

The first stage of this passage occurred in 1983 when the element came into being which would prevent collapse of the consciousness-being into the binary system’s void when contraction intensified leading to the new death. This element was the true Centre requiring a special alignment of ‘orbits’, or ‘directions’. These directions are described as contraction and expansion. In the chamber’s Core that centre is the Globe. 1983 was a year of 3 number-power. The Globe in turn represents the Third of the Solar Line or the 3 in the formula 9-6-3. It is Thea, it is the ‘act of seeing’. I wish to reproduce here an experience the Mother had in 1915, precisely on that very ‘secret and sacred’ Immortality Day, 26 November, in which this Vedic Truth of the miracle of a world evolved from the act of Seeing manifested in and through her and for which reason I can state very confidently, and based on sound supportive Knowledge, that the Temple she ‘saw’ and revealed to India as the final act of her stupendous Yoga for India and the world, is the only true Vedic Temple of our 9th Manifestation:

‘The entire consciousness immersed in divine contemplation, the whole being enjoyed a supreme and vast felicity.

‘Then was the physical body seized, first in its lower members and next the whole of it, by a sacred trembling which made all personal limits fall away little by little even in the most material sensation. The being grew in greatness progressively, methodically, breaking down every barrier, shattering every obstacle, that it might contain and manifest a force and a power which increased ceaselessly in immensity and intensity. It was as a progressive dilatation of the cells until there was a complete identification with the earth: the body of the awakened consciousness was the terrestrial globe moving harmoniously in ethereal space. All the consciousness knew that its global body was thus moving in the arms of the universal Being, and it gave itself to It in an ecstasy of peaceful bliss. Then it felt that its body was absorbed in the body of the universe and one with it; the consciousness became the consciousness of the universe, immobile in its totality, moving infinitely in its internal complexity. The consciousness of the universe sprang towards the Divine in an ardent aspiration, a perfect surrender, and it saw in the splendour of the immaculate Light, the radiant Being standing on the many-headed serpent whose body coiled infinitely around the universe. The Being in an eternal gesture of triumph mastered and created at one and the same time the serpent and the universe that issued from him; erect on the serpent he dominated it with all his victorious might, and the same gesture that crushed the hydra enveloping the universe gave it eternal birth. Then the consciousness became this Being and perceived that its form was changing once more; it was absorbed into something which was no longer a form and yet contained all forms, something which, immutable, sees, – the Eye, the Witness. And what it sees, is. Then this last vestige of form disappeared and the consciousness itself was absorbed in the Unutterable, the Ineffable…’.

Sri Aurobindo replied the following to this letter, on 31 December 1915:

‘The experience you have described is Vedic in the real sense, though not one which would easily be recognised by the modern systems of Yoga which call themselves Vedic. It is the union of the ‘Earth’ of the Veda and the Purana with the divine Principle, an earth which is said to be above the earth, that is to say, the physical being and consciousness of which the world and the body are only images. But the modern Yogas hardly recognise the possibility of a material union with the Divine.’

The Core of the Mother’s original vision of the Chamber is the secret to the new being, the Gnostic Being who manifests that material union with the Divine, who embodies the eternal Truth without disfiguring veils. This new creation exists in the material universe in a perfect alignment of the powers of contraction and expansion. Or, to express it visually, the Gnostic Being is the embodiment of the Gnostic Circle. Thus, the 4.5 Orbit of his lived experience is when the REVERSAL comes about and the contraction subsequently experienced in passage through the third quarter of the wheel and the sign Scorpio, the sign of Death, does not signify collapse and disintegration. In other words, this being has experienced the new Death in a totally conscious process. There has been a pressing inward of the consciousness to a point (rather than expansion and consequent dissolution of ‘nirvana’), but that action is met by a marvellously supportive expansion, from within, from the newly-aligned centre of one’s being. This is the description of ‘the birth that fills the void’.

Birth and death are therefore transmuted in our experience entirely. The Reversal at the 4.5 Orbit is the revolutionary secret unveiled before our eyes due to the rooting of the Truth-Consciousness in matter, or its own unveiling in the core of matter. That tiny spark of light, that luminous ‘point’ is the Point of our innermost being which becomes our ‘support’ in the experience of the new death.

When this takes place in the process of Yoga a new world is born. New possibilities arise, new experiences are open to humanity. The newness resides in the fact that prior to this Yoga, for example, the type of pressure which had to be exerted upon Eastern Europe to bring about the changes we witnessed would have been too much to bear. The result would have been the bloodiest of revolutions and much worse. It would have been a total and destructive collapse of that area upon which the pressure was applied, carrying with it the rest of civilisation.

Thus, when we say that new forces are operating in the world, it is naïve to believe that this can happen without a process of this order prior to the introduction of these new powers. Both heights and depths must be stretched to new levels or dimensions to contain this action. It is reflected in the expansion of our solar system: a new triad is added with its consequent extensions and expansions of the Eye that Sees, and hence the lived experience on Earth. But when the Yoga of the Chamber passed this crucial reversal point in 1983-4, the time had come for these forces to be released with entirely new and unexpected results. Given the newness of the process and the details of its operation, Sri Aurobindo has aptly referred to our age of transition as ‘the hour of the unexpected’.

In light of the above, it can be understood why I constantly write about ‘the centre that holds’, borrowing a line from Yeats’ apocalyptic verse. The collapse of civilisation was described by him thusly in his poem, ‘The Second Coming’…

Turning and turning in the widening gyre

The falcon cannot hear the falconer;

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

The best lack all conviction, while the worst

Are full of passionate intensity…

The ‘centre could not hold’ prior to the revolutionary Yoga of the Chamber. In 1983 that Centre, which had not been unveiled centremost in the heart of the new creation, came into existence in the evolutionary matrix. And it ‘held’ when pressured, both in India at Skambha and in the world at large during the trying experiences of the Neptune ennead. There is no better way to convey the nature of this realisation than by requesting the seeker to observe Agni-in-the-Core, the cover and frontispiece of The New Way (which is also available in poster size). This graphic image of the Core displays the perfect alignment and marriage of worlds. Never has a realisation been graced with a ‘symbol’ of such utter perfection of seeing, such exquisite and masterful use of sacred geometry as this one. Agni-in-the-Core is the heart and soul of the new creation, the centremost Centre of the new world.

The ‘Steady State’ Emerging Cosmos

When that centre (globe) was unveiled and its support (pedestal) was realised through the yogic process, Contraction as the unwinding power of Time came into harmonious interaction with the force of Expansion. It was as if a ‘steady state’ universe had been born. This condition of harmony became open to the individual seeker and it signified an entirely new range of possibilities for the Earth. It allowed for the realisation of a dynamic Peace to become established in the being and serve as the vehicle of expression on Earth.

I have written extensively of Contraction and Expansion as simultaneously operating forces or directions. But this is effected only when the centre is born that fills the void. Only then is a SPHERICAL ACTION truly possible (as the lived experience), for without such a centering the experience is always separative and linear. This means that these directions, though concurrent, are not interacting or brought into harmony.

In a binary system this means a movement along a pole (of tension). It is as if the being were sustained on a tensed elastic, with energies shifting from one end to the other, or moving along this shaft which holds the consciousness-being together. Harmony, true and proper, can never be known in such a state; there are time and space gaps to contend with. Above all, the binary poise is pathetically limited in the force or pressure it can receive from other planes. It is open or receptive only to the vital and mental regions, in attunement with the frequencies obtaining in those dimensions. If anything ‘higher’ is introduced, the being succumbs and one or the other centres becomes deranged.

It is the same for the collective consciousness and the ‘body’ of civilisation, or a national ‘body’. The Shakti operating through Time regulates the intake by evolving instruments in tune with these conditions. Aberrations do occur – on the increase especially in times of transition like our own; but on the whole the process of evolution is a flawless operation.

The problem before us at the beginning of the Neptune ennead (1980) was the discovery through the lived experience of the means to set in place in the evolutionary matrix the new alignment, which in turn would permit the intake of energies of a much finer frequency or higher pitch. This demanded an abdication of the mental binary supremacy. This required, therefore, a grappling with the death experience of Scorpio. In a word, it was necessary to transmute those energies expressed zodiacally as the shift from the Scorpion to the Eagle.

It can never be stressed too frequently that the 8th stage in the zodiacal map of evolution is the sign of Death – but that this is not the full circle: four signs follow Scorpio, four stages of the lived experience open to an evolving humanity on Earth. This map is our heritage. It describes the reason for our embodiment on this planet, as well as the measure of our progress within the womb of Earth-time.

The newly-discovered triad of planets, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, signify for humanity the new planes and the finer energies which are made available in order to experience these higher states and to allow them to mould a new world order. Insofar as it is the 8 Power we are dealing with, we note that in the Neptune/8th-planet ennead of the 1980s, this confrontation with Death has come to pass, altering the structure of our world.

Thus, in the third year of the ennead, 1983, the new death came into being. Contraction did not force the consciousness out of this material dimension, but rather was met with an upholding, supportive movement of expansion. The point where these actions ‘crossed’ created the new alignment – centred perfectly, poised in such a way that thereafter collapse was impossible, simply because at the juncture of the two there was perfect equilibrium. This is the meaning of the ‘new alignment’.

Once this is achieved a reversal occurs (1984) and it is then that Time truly becomes an ally and no longer a destroyer, a devourer of energies in an unwinding, inward spiralling drive. It is then that EVERYTHING becomes Time’s instrument, negative or positive.

However, there is one special feature of this new alignment. This condition produces the unveiling of a ‘divine Purpose’, at the centremost point of intersection. This then, this WILL, or Agni of the ancient Veda, becomes the ‘binding’ principle of our life. This is the ‘centre that holds’ – but the holding means an orbiting of that Will and no other, and nothing else. It is the beginning of a mechanism for bringing about total change in our civilisation, for creating a new order. Indeed, it is only on this basis that real Order can come about, a true cosmos in contrast to the chaos of a binary, competitive, combative world of Ignorance, a world populated by individuals orbiting not this Will and divine Purpose, but the void of their ego-will. And the ‘falcon cannot hear the falconer’….

In my journal during the December solstice I recorded certain experiences pertaining to this Purpose, this Will:

20.12.1989

…I ‘felt’ this question of the outer layers (of forms). I see how form is of many forms… Language is form. The Word is form. Thought formulated via language is form; hence K rejects thought because he is true to his path which rejects time the gestator and consolidator of Form. All of this is Form – some are simply more subtle than the denser and obvious physical.

But this morning I want to express the nature of Essence. I peeled off layers upon layers of all these dense and subtle ‘forms’. What then constitutes essence which UPHOLDS form, which is one with it but yet different, of a different quality or substance, if you will? What is, in a word, the essence of Essence?

What I ‘saw’ was Purpose, Intent, Will. This is not Form. It is Being. Again, it is the driving Power in the universe. Its ‘symbol’ is the Horse: Agni. The ancients knew…

I know this too. I have LIVED it, for this is the important part. The mind learns, the vital lives. And it is the vital which is the vehicle of Purpose or Will in the universe.

The quality of Purpose cannot be explained by forms. One can only cite ‘being’ – what IS. Hence it is a question of Simultaneous Time in the Core. This is what conveys Purpose/Will: the perfect Centre where the naked Truth is lodged. That ‘space’ which is really a convergence of directions and nothing more. This convergence permits a ‘field’ to arise from this centre/core. And once the field comes into being, forms can arise. Hence we say that the field is the extended body of the Sun-Core.

Always we return to this question of the inner truth. The Magical Carousel conveys this superbly in the Capricorn Chapter: layers upon layers of form are peeled away until the children reach the centremost core (of the mountain mass). There stands essential time. Simultaneous Time. Time in the seed, the 0 of Being.

It is in that ‘space’ that the children come to that truth which is, so to speak, ‘formless’. That is, the Time-Spirit demands to know their identity. They give their ‘names’. He replies that that does not explain, ‘Who you are’… Name is still Form. This is clear.

But what is the Time-Spirit fishing for? He presses in, to the point where he reaches Purpose: destiny, or the expression of that Purpose/Will in the universe. This is the Dharma (duty) of the inner truth. Destiny is the ‘form’ of the inner truth or Purpose. And Will is the motor or essence of the Time-Spirit. All of this is given in Carousel.

The ‘formless’. Again I come to the essential difference between my work and all others: the ‘formless’ I refer to is the centremost ‘space’ where form is seen as the womb, the evolucrum housing this ‘centre, this convergence of orbits or universal directions.

The important element is the Centre. When one reaches the Formless, or the ‘space’ where there are no more layers, via a PLUNGE INTO THE CORE (rather than an extension beyond), then there is no question of a void encountered, as with the process of extension beyond as the consciousness disperses itself and dissolves in the Infinite and Transcendent. A plunge into the Core discloses this sacred convergence and the true and only Centre. One can never reach that Centre by extension beyond. This is obvious. One can then never speak of emptiness or void to describe that centre-space. Emptiness and void are terms (forms) which arise to express the method and finality of the extension quest, the dissolving of the consciousness. The important factor which permits this dissolution (and hence the experience of emptiness and void) is precisely the fact that the Core is absent.

However, this is, of course, an illusion. The centre/core never dissolves. It is simply that the seeker adopts a POISE which permits the illusion to arise of a core-less, centre-less experience and consequently a void. That is, rather than accept to be carried by the Supramental Shakti into the core, as the children in Carousel, the seeker resists this force and its compelling pressure into the core of creation, through the countless layers which constitute our world of material creation. One adopts an escapist poise. Peripherally oriented – outward, until the ‘formless’ is reached. And that Formless is nothing other than the Absolute in his transcendent ‘form’, his occupancy of the Infinite by a spread-out, thinned and diluted and dissolved expanse of Being: power-less.

But how incomplete is this realisation! Creation is not a half but an integral truth. And above all, physically it states what it is, what the real nature of Reality is, comprising both essence and form.

We see therefore that cosmic structures, the very structure of the universe and our own planetary system, describe the truth of the New Way: round forms are the ‘words’ used to express the cosmic truth; circular orbits, and the like. These circles and spherical forms imply the undeniable existence of a centre, a centre that holds.

A new world is born when as a civilisation we become poised differently, in the centre rather than in the periphery. This means a NEW ALIGNMENT.

This is the ‘new spirituality’: perception and experience and realisation poised in the core, the seat of the Dharma or that Divine Purpose.

When the Formless is reached via extension beyond then one cannot know that Purpose. Purpose and the seat of Will are known only in the centremost space of the Core. Because spirituality has followed the course of the Buddha into the Void beyond, science has followed suit and evolved theories of purposelessness, or mechanics devoid of conscious intent. This is materialism divorced from essence and purpose. This can only arise in an experience coloured entirely by the void-extension as separate from the central Fullness. Hence it is a fragmented seeing.

The Solar Line, 9/6/3-0/1, expresses in its Being/Avatar this total, integral Reality. The vertical descent of the Solar Line is 9-6-3-0/1. The evolution on Earth (in calendar time) is 3-6-9-0/1. The two together describe the world and all its convergent dimensions.

It is important to note one fact: Truth in our minds is invariably connected to Essence only. When we think of Truth we think of the Formless. It is an automatic connection. This is the result of the Undermining.

It all becomes clear… Truth is only a property of the Formless. My God, even K fell into this trap: ‘Truth cannot be exact, what can be measured is not truth’. Did he not see how he was fortifying the matter/spirit divide? It is unbelievable how people – high and low – just DO NOT SEE. None question these accepted notions. There is Rajneesh who believes he is the saviour. What is he offering as his ticket to salvation? The same formless Void. The same nirvana which dissolves the Core that alone can give birth to true forms.

The Void is not the answer. The Void is the PROBLEM.

I alone write about ‘the truth of form’. But what I write makes no impact because no one understands at this point what the problem is, what the real distortion is and by consequence how to resolve it. For everyone truth is only perceivable in the domain of the Formless. When we deal with Form we are dealing with something else. Herein lies the description of the separative consciousness which is the mark of the human species. For even our descriptions of that divisive consciousness are wrong. Yet people mouth the right phrases and words continuously. They speak of oneness, of universal, cosmic consciousness. They may even have experiences along these lines. But it stops there at words or experiences.

The true Knowledge does not exist, even the best cannot carry those experiences over into this dimension which has been overtaken by the veils of an undermining Maya. These are not veils now but ironclad crusts. It takes real power now, coupled with Knowledge, to bring down these divisive barriers.

Truth is all-pervading. It is not a property of any one thing, or one dimension, or domain or province. It is all things – subtle and dense. Truth is simply WHAT IS. Truth is clear-seeing of what is. That is, it sees even the Falsehood, the disfiguring, the chasm as what is, but it does not mis-see and call falsehood truth. Truth is never denial. Truth is a consciousness. When we speak of the Truth-Consciousness we mean a consciousness which is able TO SEE WHAT IS. A consciousness which sees the truth of Essence as well as of Form; which is able to penetrate the veils to reach that true Being in all things. And there is also a relative and an absolute Truth. The former is truth subjected to the disfiguration, a victim of the divisive chasm. Whereas absolute truth does not suffer from any disfiguration. The area between essence and form is uncontaminated. The truth in both is equal, oneness. This is oneness: the truth of the Formless Essence and the Multiplicity of Form.

The mind may learn and the vital live – but Mind is still a part of the higher hemisphere, a ‘higher’ manifestation in a sense. When Mind evolves then we begin to speak of a conscious evolution. The reason is simple enough: Mind is the apparatus of cognition, self-awareness, self-reflection. Unless this capacity exists, all the lived experiences of the vital mean little or nothing. The animal lives ‘in the vital/physical’, with mind not evolved enough to permit self-awareness and conscious experience. This describes its limitations. The human being has the potential of something else, and again something else. But the important thing is the unfolding of that principle, that capacity, that light and power which allows these centres to express their true function but within the total harmony of integrated being.

The Third can draw the lines of this greater Harmony; the Fourth cements it in the physical. That is, the Fourth Power in manifestation allows for the integration in the physical being of these harmonised centres and their forces and powers of expansion.

This is what the City signifies as the field of the Fourth. It is that action of cementing in the physical, in a body, the superior Harmony. Whereas the Centre/Temple as the field of the Third is what establishes a connection (bridge) between the higher planes and this Earth.

This means that until now, until this integral, supramental fourfold manifestation, the planes available and from where one could draw inspiration, so to speak, were limited to the mental. One could go no higher. No wider. These were the boundaries. And on that basis none of the operating centres in the human being could express their full potential since this full potential can only manifest when each centre finds its rightful place within the totality of being.

In this light it is understood why the City is indispensable to complete the Symbol of the gnostic society and the gnostic being. The soul-temple of the Third makes the contact and constructs the bridges, closes the gaps, crosses the chasms and permits the power and light of those higher and more refined regions to manifest on Earth. But the centre/temple is not the field for that physical manifestation. Indeed, Thea is ‘the act of seeing’. SHE GIVES BIRTH TO THE VISION. Uncontaminated, undiluted – pure. But then the field is required to give material expression/form/body to that Seeing. This, in turn, is the function symbolism of the City.

The two, Third and Fourth, must be taken as a dual manifestation similar to the 9 and 6, or the first and second of the Solar Line. The Vision is still ‘up there’ if the field for its expression in form does not manifest.

This new action is explained in the centre/temple itself: No mixture, no distortion of the vision. The Seeing produces the perfect Form. This is the way the Third demonstrates for the world the truth of the New Way. It is a way in which the old boundaries are extended, exceeded; the old and former limitations are surpassed.

In the Centre this action is possible and easily accomplished, as well as demanded. This is because the Centre, rightfully speaking, is the point where a perfect convergence exists. There is no question of ‘gaps’, ‘chasms’, distances. Essence and Form are one. They occupy one space. And this is so beautifully conveyed in Agni-in-the-Core.

Yes, Agni…the divine Will working in the world. Agni, that ‘point’ of perfect convergence, that ‘navel of the world’, that centre that holds. It holds because it is the perfect convergence of universal directions and wherein no ‘gaps’ exist. The proof of this astounding, monumental breakthrough in evolution lies in the New Way.

On the Road to Unity

The principal feature of the new order is action stemming from within, from the centre. There can be no external imposition. The new creation is characterised by this self-contained, spontaneous out-flowering from the centre. However, this must not be confused with the contemporary notion of ‘doing one’s own thing’. This formula is the ticket to chaos because the ‘thing’ one does is not the result of truly centred and innermost promptings from the soul, but simply manipulation and cajoling. A state of chaos means a situation in which confusion prevails to such a degree that the human being cannot know what is an inner truth or simply a clever manipulation by forces entirely external and foreign to that inner truth.

At the same time, we seek a UNIFYING principle. We seek a core-truth which is not only eternal but universal. If we seek order it is understood that there must be something central to that state which has the capacity to infuse our atmosphere and environment with a single purpose. Concurrently, the existence of a unifying element of this nature must allow for the true character of a material creation to express itself: unity and multiplicity – a perfect blending of the two. This is the heart of the new truth-conscious Creation.

We see in the recent transformation of the Communist Bloc something of the above taking shape. Indeed, we can go further and state that it is because this divine Purpose had been unveiled as the central and binding principle of the new creation in 1983-1984, that the movement took shape the way it did, startling in its pace and thoroughness. The key factor in the process was precisely this question of no impositions from outside. Carrying this formula over to the happenings in Eastern Europe, we observe that it was the single most important factor operating in the transformation. There was no foreign power interfering in what was transpiring within the individual components of the Bloc. Russia under the leadership of Mikhail Gorbachev maintained a distance; and the western capitalist nations had no need to interfere. Thus we see, perhaps for the first time, something NEW operating, a new power. We see peoples spontaneously responding to impulsions arising from within the natural boundaries of the national consciousness-being. Because there was no interference or external imposition of a truth (or falsehood) foreign to the nation’s inner truth, the process was carried out with ease and little violence.

Difficulties arise when the inner truth is not permitted free and spontaneous expression. Violence and destruction are the outcome of wrong directions, – that is, a pressing in from without, rather than the easy and organic flowering from within. The problem has been accurately depicted in the temple being constructed in Auroville, in contrast to the Mother’s original vision and plan. The latter describes the presence and activity of this new Power as a force opertating from within, from the Centre; and from that ‘point’, that seat of the dharma and the inner truth, the lines are extended which delineate the external forms and boundaries. There is no imposition from outside, from the periphery. But in the modified version which has become the ‘symbol’ of the knots and problems humanity must contend with on its road to unity, the periphery (walls) IMPOSED THEIR MEASURE (of falsehood) and impinged upon the space of the Centre, thereby destroying the divine Maya or Measure. Because of the central void, in humanity as well as in the temple in Auroville, this method of external imposition has become the norm.

This pressing in describes the prevalent attitude of our present civilisation. We see the effects in every sphere of life. We see it in our modern systems of agriculture where chemical fertilisers and pesticides are the tools of this imposition and do violence to the soil and its products. For a time we are impressed with the results of our imposition and see in them a sign of a superior mental status within the kingdom of Nature, whom we have learned to dominate and whom we force to yield under the pressure of this external imposition.

We see it in the area of our collective desire nature, where societies the world over are artificially stimulated to want more and more of the things of less and less real value and meaningful substance. At the same time, suppression of that part of our collective being as experienced for the past fifty years in communist countries will not succeed. The vital demands space to expand and express itself. Similarly, the mind of mankind must be free, – free to receive the new Light and express it unfettered by dogmas – political or religious. In a word, the human being’s true and foremost right is FREEDOM, and any political system which impinges upon this natural condition is doomed from the outset.

However, the new being, as I have written in the Prologue to The New Way, expresses ‘only the highest part’ of himself. Therefore, while the highest part is unknown or inoperative, restrictions of various hues and shapes and degrees of severity are inevitable. Means are devised to govern the collective body, all of which signify an outer imposition of some sort. The new world order must therefore be truly new. It must involve an order forging its lines and parameters from within – from within each citizen; and somehow this spontaneous self-expression has to be brought into the harmony of the whole and integrated into the expression of the larger body. Only such an ‘order’ can be deemed truly NEW. Whatever falls short of this is simply a repetition of the binary patterns of the old order.

In the initial transformation of the Communist Bloc we do detect glimpses of this new function in the recent process of dismantling. The main feature, as stated, was the absence of outer impositions and nations left free to find their own solutions. But we must analyse what was required to allow this revolutionary operation to transpire. Clearly Russia had to be kept out of the affair. For this, events were set in motion in 1984 which would ensure the positive collaboration of the USSR during the remaining years of the ennead, in particular 1989. The yogic achievement of 1983-4 began to bear fruit immediately when Brezhnev died and was followed for a very brief spell by Andropov; and finally in March 1985, Mikhail Gorbachev took over and began his revolutionising work. These shifts followed one upon the other in rapid succession. Truly an acceleration had begun after the 1984 Reversal, as had been foreseen: things would move fast from that point onward. But what is exceptional is the accuracy with which Time’s control has operated in accordance with the Gnostic Circle guidelines, so that the preliminary basis for the new order in Eastern Europe would be fully laid before the end of the final 9 year of the Neptune ennead of the 1980s: the end that is a beginning, as all 9-power years are in the harmony of gnostic time.

The question remains, How to bring about a collective process which is radically different from the old order, – that is, a collective response which is centrally determined and not the result of outer impositions? In the final chapter of Volume 3 of The New Way, entitled ‘The Core of a Divine Purpose’, I wrote in detail about the manner in which the new power would operate to bring about very rapid, seemingly impossible transformations. The key is action CENTRE-BASED. That is, humanity is not moved by waves overtaking a nation from outside, of whatever sort. Rather, each citizen is responsible to an impulse from within, from his or her core. However, this can only transpire when the true Centre has been unveiled for the Earth and this new element has been rendered an active component in the process of evolution. The Yoga of the Chamber was done for this purpose. The establishment of the Centre in a nuclear space opened the way for the events which swept across Europe. Without that Centre we would have witnessed a repetition of the old, with its attending acts of destruction and consequent collapse:

‘…In that individualised centre all must harmonise and a new balance must be created which will allow the individual to evolve a different and more enlightened society. Yet the soul is not separate from the whole, even as the individual can no longer survive if he sees himself as an isolated particle unrelated to the whole. Our material creation is a miracle of interconnectedness, which at the same time is its great bane. For we are faced today with the harsh reality that a solution will work in one sphere only if it can be applied to or incorporate the total sphere. The tragic condition of the Earth at present, her most dire and lonely hour, is due to the demand for integral solutions. The answer to disarmament, to war, to harmony between nations, is the same answer to the individual’s inner hell. And what is more, the breakthrough that solves one problem solves them all.
            ‘But what is that breakthrough?
‘In this study a realisation has been discussed which, it was stated, has the power to solve existing problems. It can be said that this realisation is the breakthrough, is the one solution that solves all problems. This may seem a wild and utopian statement, but it bears the test of logic. If all is indeed interconnected and the perceptive eye sees that no answers will come that do not accept this primary characteristic of life on this planet – its irrefutable interconnectedness – then a way must be found which has the power to work on all the parts of this interwoven whole, and in a manner which at the same time organises and controls them. The answer lies in a realisation of the most intense and compelling centrality. This is the realisation of the One in the Core. It is always at the heart, always and ever innermost, and its ability to influence the parts resides in the fact that the same centrality is the essence of each interconnected thing. Thus it influences by oneness.
‘It is at this point that the Fourth who is the One is born in the individual, thus making of the seeker an element in society which serves as a magnet able to contribute to the rise of a gnostic world in an entirely new and harmonious way…
‘…The combined realisations of harmony and integration are the secret for the rise of the new society. This takes us out of the realm of mental formulas and the solution of problems relies solely on the expression of an inner truth. That truth, that One in the Core, becomes the power which harmonises and integrates in a manner none in the mental consciousness could devise. It works from the periphery and from the centre. These outer and innermost reaches are native to all created things. Thus in the joint action described nothing is excluded in the process, precisely because exclusion and division are the causes of all our present woes…’

The condition of Europe receives prominent treatment in Volume 3 – in

particular the division of Germany and the Iron Curtain. I refer to this state of affairs as the direct result of the work of the ‘Lord of Nations’…

‘…Though the asuric power could not gain total supremacy over the world at the time of the rise of Nazism and the resultant Second World War, it did manage to leave its mark on the Earth, which occurred largely because the root of the evil had not been perceived in its more global aspects, – that is, it had not been seen as a force which not only settled itself in Germany but which had also dug its roots deeply into other areas of the world. The proof of this is to be found in certain key happenings…

‘Thus to begin with, if we look at Germany itself at the end of the War we can see the extent of the success of that dark force by observing that the country was dramatically split in two. Not only is this a further example of the divisive characteristic again manifesting itself, but the power of destruction inherent in such acts is visible in the condition that developed after this initial action… Consequently, the division of Germany, apparently the only solution possible at the time, gave immediate rise to what is called ‘the iron curtain’. Surely there can be no clearer example of the falsehood inherent in our diplomatic processes. Diplomacy today, as during the whole of historic time, is the product of mental being and seeing; in consequence, the fruit of its efforts is always productive of a greater and greater process of disintegration – on the basis of acts of division and separation…

‘Between 1945 and 1950, since the Lord of Nations’ efforts were fruitful, several such acts of division occurred, all linked to the same root force. One was the division of Germany, as stated; another was the partition of India…

‘In the world of tomorrow, the world of unity, nations will be formed on the basis of their soul-power; and this will be a harmonious process, – not one of division but revealing rather the delight in the play of the Many in the One. For this, however, the consciousness of a collective cell that unifies must first be fully born.’

The process of unification has been set upon its way and the divisive barriers are beginning to crumble…but in a ‘new way’. It would seem therefore that my New Year prayer of 1976, which later was included in The New Way as its Prologue, is being answered, as a small beginning, it is true, but it is a beginning…

‘I pray for a new way to come about, a way that will cause the barriers between nations and between individuals to fall away, – that we may come to the realisation of a new way.

‘I pray for peace and harmony and good will – above all, good will – among men. I pray for the emergence of a greater understanding and a breakthrough in the attitude of division, be this either political, social or religious. May all men be brought to the realisation that they are members of the one planetary family, regardless of colour or creed, regardless of wealth or poverty.

‘I pray for prosperity, that each man and woman and child may have what is necessary to live in decency in this world, so that their passage on this planet will be a joy and signify a progress, a spiritual and a material rise.

‘May each man come to enjoy the possibility of moving about as he wishes over the Earth, as his one home and the one home of all his brethren; and to express himself as he may like, and to know freedom in all things. But may this freedom be only for the expression of the highest part of himself. May all the ugliness of the old man fall away.

‘May the whole Earth come to realise the one goal, and to understand that no matter how contradictory the appearances may be, each one of us is here for the realisation of the One Goal: to help the Earth realise herself, though her ways are many and appear each one to offer a resistance to the other. Yet this resistance is merely to create the conditions needed for the realisation, the all-embracing Realisation.

‘Let each person see the cause within himself for the suffering and the agony of his Earth. Let him understand that the division in his being is productive of a division within his society. Let him heal this division, and then come to the new way in the collective body – that of true collaboration in a life of harmony, of positive growth, and of all that is true and good and real…’

On 12 March 1976, after this ardent New Year prayer, experiences began which culminated at the Equinox with the unveiling of the Fourth Power of the Solar Line, – the victorious Son, Sri Aurobindo himself reborn on 26 November 1963 or Immortality Day. This Power is the ‘centre that holds’, a power now set abroad upon the Earth, changing the world we have known, for the entire Earth is his stage and the world is his ‘city’.

On 27 February 1985, this fourth member of the Solar Line wrote to me… ‘I agree with you. Citizenships mean nothing, for after all we are all humans. Some humans do nasty things to other humans, which has to stop. I have deliberately chosen Chile as a stage to stop this nastiness; as an example for better things. If you can make India a staging place for a higher consciousness, well and good. I prefer to work in the US’ backyard because it is so prominent on the world scene. I also chose political means because they are the premises people understand – material and obvious. I may be wrong, but I’m quite sceptical that human nature will change or become enlightened through spiritual ways. That may take a long time, and in a long time we are all dead.’

In light of the above, we note that at the very time Europe was experiencing unprecedented changes, in Chile, his ‘chosen stage’, elections were held drawing to an end an oppressive military rule. But let us look more closely at the power of gnostic time operating in all these interconnected events, hinging on certain dates and sensitive points in the Gnostic Circle. Thus we note that the newly-elected president of Chile was born on none other than that same Immortality Day. His full number-power is, like the Fourth of the Solar Line, 2 (26.11.1918=2), while the year of his birth – again like the Fourth – equals 1 (1918=1). There are 45 years that separate these two births. Sri Aurobindo was about this age when he wrote the following profound words on the future ideal and the ‘unseen’ power’ which would operate in the world to fulfil his vision of ‘freedom and unity’. We see that in his new incarnation, as the Fourth Power, he himself has been an ‘unseen power’ whose secret presence gnostic Time unfolds…

‘It is the wrath of Rudra that has swept over the earth and the track of his foot-prints can be seen in these ruins. There has come as a result upon the race the sense of having lived in many falsehoods and the need of building according to an ideal. Therefore we have now to meet the question of the Master of Truth. Two great words of the divine Truth have forced themselves insistently on our minds through the crash of the ruins and the breath of the tempest and are now the leading words of the hoped-for reconstruction, – freedom and unity. But everything depends, first, upon the truth of our vision of them, secondly, upon the sincerity with which we apply it, last and especially on the inwardness of our realisation. Vain will be the mechanical construction of unity, if unity is not in the heart of the race and if it be made only a means for safeguarding and organising our interests; the result will then be only, as it was in the immediate past, a fiercer strife and new outbreaks of revolution and anarchy. No paltering mechanisms which have the appearance but not the truth of freedom, will help us; the new structure, however imposing, will only become another prison and compel a fresh struggle for liberation. The only safety for man lies in learning to live from within outward, not depending on institutions and machinery to perfect him, but out of his growing inner perfection availing to shape a more perfect form and frame of life; for by this inwardness we shall best be able both to see the truth of the high things which we now only speak with our lips and form into outward intellectual constructions, and to apply their truth sincerely to all outward living. If we are to found the kingdom of God in humanity, we must first know God and see and live the diviner truth of our being in ourselves; otherwise how shall a new manipulation of the constructions of the reason and the scientific systems of efficiency which have failed us in the past, avail to establish it? It is because there are plenty of signs that the old error continues and only a minority, leaders perhaps in light, but not yet in action, are striving to see more clearly, inwardly and truly, that we must expect as yet rather the last twilight which divides the dying from the unborn ages than the real dawning. For a time, since the mind of man is not yet ready, the old spirit and method may yet be strong and seem for a short while to prosper; but the future lies with the men and nations who first see beyond both the glare and the dusk of gods of the morning and prepare themselves to be fit instruments of the Power that is pressing towards the light of a greater ideal.’
